“Couldn't wait to leave”

I can't put my finger on why I disliked this hotel so vehemently, it was just a sense of unease that made me want to leave asap. Maybe someone had died in our room, I don't know! Our first room smelt "odd", not paricularly unpleasant, just odd and gave me the creeps. The room's furnishings were standard in a Travelodge kind of way, and the bathroom looked newly fitted (although there was a p*** hair in our bath and the loo leaked at the bottom - yuk! - however they did move us to a different room without any problem). The hotel setting is in amongst lots of trees and under a mountain, so it was always dark and gloomy. Our room was in an annex which meant a wet walk to breakfast. Also it was on the ground floor which meant I didn't feel comfortable sleeping with the window open. In our second room, the hairdryer didn't work and the shower in the morning was a tepid trickle - when I pointed this out to reception they smiled knowingly and said that because a large coach party had all got up early there wouldn't be much water - hardly our fault though!! My partner said that the cooked breakfast was very good although I just felt too ill at ease to face it either day!

“Great place to stay”

Stay for 2 nights in a family room as we had our 2yr old with us.

Lovely room, clean, plenty of space & the "jet bath" was really relaxing & huge.

Staff were really friendly & helpful.

It is expensive but great grounds/location & for that level of facilities in the lakes you have to pay

We booked a one night late deal direct with the hotel, which cost £109. This included dinner, bed and breakfast, and use of the leisure facilities. There was a mix up at reception on check in as we had been upgraded to a waterside room (possibly 173?), as a surprise gift and the new room wasn't ready. We had a balcony overlooking the beck, which was fantastic and the upgrade also included a small bottle of wine and a fruit basket, but this sadly never materialised! It was a bit disappointing to receive the wine and extra toiletries after we'd already got to the room, given that we'd already had to wait until 3pm to check in. That aside, the room was very nice and had the weather been anything but non-stop rain- it would have been perfect.
Many of the rooms are in 'lodges' away from the main hotel area, which we found great. The grounds are lovely to walk around and the evening meal in Purdey's was lovely. Dinner looked a little 'nouvelle cuisine' for my liking and we expected to still feel hungry at the end. This was not the case. The bottle of wine was good too and not too pricey at around £12, I think. The swimming pool and leisure facilities were great and not too busy. I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay the full price for a stay, but we will definitely return if we can get another late deal.

Since our visit, my Mother-in-law went on a 1-night Spa break, which she thoroughly enjoyed. After I called the hotel regarding the missing fruit basket on our visit, they apologised and made sure it was in my Mother-in-law's room when she arrived. Also, as it was a special occasion, she also received a complimentary glass of bubbly at dinner, which was a lovely and unexpected touch. She also plans to visit again and is willing to pay the full price!

We stayed here for a friend's wedding over a Bank Holiday weekend. We had a wonderful time, and the hotel was OK, but not perfect.

Some pluses and minuses:
+ Excellent pool with very clean / up-to-date changing facilities.
+ Lovely grounds.
+ Food at the wedding was exceptional.
+ Very friendly and helpful staff in the main bar.
+Good-sized room, with the added surprise bonus of a spa bath!
+ King-sized bed - invaluable (with a duvet as opposed to sheets, although it wasn't necessary that weekend).

- Check-in could have been friendlier and more welcoming - we did get the feeling we were inconveniencing the receptionist.
- Food service until 20.45 seems a little early for a hotel in a popular holiday destination - although it did prompt us to go to the excellent Zefirellis in Ambleside.
- Breakfast was poor, with badly-laid out serveries, limited choices, and a general feeling of not being too bothered.

Cumbria: The Langdale Hotel, Lake District: "An absolute joy!"
Date: August 10, 2004
What can we say !!!! My husband and I have just returned from a stay at the Langdale Estate, which we thoroughly recommend. We enjoyed the leisure facilities, which lived up to our expectations. Lunch in Wainwrights especially good, we will be returning again just for the lamb!! The new bar Hobsons is very impressive and is extremely relaxing after a day's wakling around the surrounding fabulous countryside. Our room was very comfortable and most importantly clean!! The staff are very polite and extremely helpful. As we are keen walkers, the hotel is so ideally located close to the Lakes and the wonderful backdrop of the Langdale Pikes. We have now re-booked for a stay during the Christmas holidays, and will definately be returning again next Spring. Great hotel for all the family, the best we have stayed in, in the Lakes. It is extremely popular and we can see why!
