“Nice views, but at a price!”

Eltermere Country House Hotel

The hotel is in a fantastic location and has some great views, with a nice pub (the Britannia) within easy walking distance. Once inside, however, it is clear that very little has changed in the last few decades (with the possible exception of the wireless internet) - check out the photo gallery on the website for further evidence. The beautiful views were somewhat spoilt by the wafting aroma - presumably that of a septic tank in desperate need of emptying.

Most disappointing, however, was the quality of food. Whilst the website describes “years of experience, care and attention to detail”, little evidence of this was found during the stay. If you’re enjoying a drink in the bar then be sure to keep the noise down otherwise it is possible that you will be reprimanded by a member of staff if it’s getting late (i.e. after 10pm).

There are several other fantastic hotels in the same area which offer similar breathtaking views but at a fraction of the price and with a somewhat more contemporary approach.

“More guest house than country house”

Eltermere Country House Hotel

More guest house than country house hotel, this a very regimented establishment with throw backs to 50s land ladies.
The breakfast is served late so if you want an early start on the fells - forget it. Dinner is at seven prompt and guests are asked to gather in the bar or reception areas awaiting to be called in, The food was average and the desserts served by a bizarre system of calling each table in turn.
No tea or coffee available in the rooms.
The accommodation was adequate but not special, the decor looked in need of an update. Prices are on the high side and don't reflect what is on offer. The staff were friendly and the location was superb but we felt the hotel was organised for their convenience not ours. This is not a walkers hotel and we will not be returning.

We visited this old country house for a last minute birthday treat in November. We got the last room in the place and although it had not yet been refurbished it was warm and very spacious and the view was fabulous. The welcome was warm and the open fire was always lit. Tea and coffee were available in the lounge at all times.

We would very definitley return and in time the new management should have all of the rooms up to date.

The dinner was a splendid affair of 5 courses all for a supplement of £20, excellent value! Seconds were offered for pudding!

However, the true sign of a classy and welcoming hotel was being offered soldiers with my boiled egg! What service! Fantastic! Loved it!

The Location of this hotel is very good stunning views, our room was not a superior one so was a little small. The main grip was no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. I like a cuppa when I wake up and especially when away as I am sure most people do. I am not inclined to having to trudge downstairs to get one. I also can never understand why put a TV in the room that only has a fuzzy picture? Lastly my wife is veggie and when asked for a cooked breakfast alternatives for a cooked breakfast were not available, so all that arrived was a portion of scrambled eggs a table spoon of mushrooms and half a tomato. I loved the view from the hotel but will not be going back as there are so many other hotels out there and most doing it better than this.

This hotel is in a great location with superb views and away from the crowds and the noise. Perfect for hikers and cyclists who visit this area for the countryside.

The bedroom was basic but very clean, warm and had a comfortable bed.

The staff were all very friendly and we were made to feel very welcome as soon as we arrived.

The meals at night were excellent - all freshly produced, the menu changed every night and uniquely guests were given the chance of "seconds" with any desserts which had not been eaten.

A very homely atmosphere and we would definately return.
