I feel as if I was in a different hotel to the other reviewers! This hotel is central to Ambleside, across the road from the Salutation (where we had stayed for 4 nights previously) and I was appalled by the state of the place. Yes, it was friendly, but that's where it ended. The room was a tiny double, (3m x 2.5m) with a tiny shower space. The hall stank of stale beer and cigarettes (time to lift those carpets!) and the labyrinth of corridors and stairs to get to our room was something else. Don't bother to heave your suitcase up those stairs (no lift) we just took our pyjamas out of the suitcase and left our other stuff in the car. Parking is a joke. 5/6 tight spaces for all the guests. i.e get parked early and don't take your car out again - Ambleside can be a busy place.

The decor is dated and dirty, (even though the bed linen was clean and comfortable- see my pictures.) Breakfast was bland. We were not the only residents to be appalled, the people checking into the room next to us left in a hurry to book in somewhere else. And its not cheap. £80 a night when you can pay the same for a splendid room at Churchill's down the road or a little more (for a lot more) at the Salutation.

Don't do it! I tell you. Go elsewhere.

Stayed here for a weekend and thought we'd leave a review as we loved it. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, our room was very pleasant, and we loved ambleside, the quaint pubs, and especially the hotel bar. We will be returning!

The Queens Hotel extends a warm cosy welcome on a winter break. It is ideally situated on Ambleside main street, within walking distance of local restaurants, pubs and shops. Tiny problem .........parking, but we managed not too badly in December, although I would not like to try finding a parking space in the high summer season.
We found the hotel comfortable, and clean of course. Plenty of hot water for bathing, excellent choice of breakfast menu.
At £38 per person per night, we felt we had value for money and will certainly return to the Queens on our next visit to the Lakes.

We arrived on Friday afternoon, 23/11/07, and were fortunate to be able to park directly in front of the Hotel. The Receptionist informed us of the situation regarding parking and the information was very much appreciated. We were given a parking time disc to display on our vehicle. Potential guests should be aware that you are only allowed 30 minutes parking in the bays and the vehicle must then be moved and not returned for 2 hours. From 6 at night until 10 the next morning, there are no restrictions. The car park at the rear of the Hotel is very small but accessable, we have a Nissan Terrano which isnt the easiest vehicle to park but have been in tighter car parks than this one. We booked for a 2- night stay and as Saturday was the day of the Christmas lights parade, we parked in the main public car park adjacent to Bridge House. A very helpful parking attendant informed us that we could leave our vehicle in the car park overnight until 10 the next morning if we wished. We did, in fact, return our vehicle to the bays outside the Hotel when the crowds had dispersed following the parade.
We found ALL of the Staff at the Hotel to be very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much bother to them. Our room was in the front of the hotel and I had specifically requested a room on the lower floor as My Wife suffers from M.E. and cannot climb a lot of stairs. The Staff were very helpful on this issue and the room was perfect for us. We found the room to be quite acceptable with no complaints from us on that score. The room was very warm and clean and we could have watched the parade from our room window should we have wished to do so. We dined in the White Lion Hotel on Friday evening as we have dined there before and the meals are really first class at a reasonable cost. We dined in the Queens on Saturday night and the meal was also first class. The breakfasts were of high standard and the waiting/bar staff could not have been more helpful. All in all, we really enjoyed our short stay at The Queens Hotel and we will most certainly return as soon as we are able to. As for some of the comments on other reviews here, I cannot understand how some people failed to enjoy their stay at The Queens. We are all entitled to our opinions and we have nothing but praise for this Hotel and ALL of the Staff.

“Value for money”

Queen's Hotel

The Queens Hotel is situated right in the middle of Ambleside.
I've stayed here twice with the family staying in twin and single rooms. Single rooms are very small and a bit cramped though the twin rooms are a good size. All rooms come equipped with tea/coffee making facilities, TV, hairdrier etc. etc.
You have to be lucky to get a parking space right in front of the hotel (about 8 spaces) and there is a very small car park right behind the hotel but access is very difficult. Parking is available though in adjoining streets.
These minus points are really outweighed by the plus points.
This hotel really is good value for money. We payed £32 each (per person whether in single or twin room) which was an excellent rate (costs more in summer, check their website).
The rooms were very clean and serviced daily. Staff in the hotel were really pleasant both on reception and in the bar/restaurant.
The best thing though was the food. English breakfast was excellent (only bettered by the Salutation but about twice the price for accommodation) and the evening meals, served till 9.30 pm, were a very good quality, average price for a main course around £8 which is cheaper than nearby restaurants.
