Our weekend break was booked by a friend and, after reading some of the earlier reviews, I travelled to Ambleside with some trepidation. My fears were unfounded. The 'narrow' lane to the car park was easily wide enough for my Celica which is not a small car - first hurdle negotiated. Check-in was simple with friendly staff and whilst it was strange to be asked to settle the bill at this point at least it saved having to do so on check-out. Our room was spotlessly clean and comfortable, in fact everything appeared to be brand new including the LCD tv. The bathroom was also excellent although I would have preferred a shower to a bath but if we had booked earlier this would not have been a problem as most of the other rooms contained showers. The only word of caution I would offer is that reaching the top floor, where our room was, involved climbing quite a few steps - not for the unfit or disabled. I had been worried about the noise from the bar late at night as I am a light sleeper but it was not a problem - noise did drift up now and then but it was not too invasive and I certainly had a good night's sleep in the large, cosy bed - second hurdle cleared. Breakfast was very good. Whilst the main bar was not to my taste the small residents bar at the rear of the hotel was superb - small and cosy with a roaring fire - the perfect place to watch Israel overcome Russia. For dining out I would recommend the Thai restaurant in the old town hall - beautiful food and friendly people - but I would suggest booking a table early rather than leaving it to chance later in the evening. All things considered I thought the Churchill was a very good place for our weekend break and certainly good value for money.
