Stayed here the weekend before xmas and was very quiet! You do sign in at the bar area instead of a usual reception area but this did not bother us. we stayed in room 21 on the 1st floor right above the outside smoking area so it got very noisy at night. if you intend to be in bed before 12 then do not stay on the 1st floor! but they do turn the music off at 12- and the heating 2! our room was absolutely spotless, cannot fault it 1 bit. we had a huge bathroom with a seperate bath and shower! the maid even came in on the sat morning (only arrived on fri) and changed our towels! breakfast lovely. bar was quite lively at night time but no trouble. well situated in town centre, within walking distance of bakeries, pubs, shop and restaurants. overall the hotel was well worth the money and do not have anything bad to say at all! well worth the money! but like i said if you are looking for an early night make sure you are at the top of the hotel!

“Worries unfounded”

Our weekend break was booked by a friend and, after reading some of the earlier reviews, I travelled to Ambleside with some trepidation. My fears were unfounded. The 'narrow' lane to the car park was easily wide enough for my Celica which is not a small car - first hurdle negotiated. Check-in was simple with friendly staff and whilst it was strange to be asked to settle the bill at this point at least it saved having to do so on check-out. Our room was spotlessly clean and comfortable, in fact everything appeared to be brand new including the LCD tv. The bathroom was also excellent although I would have preferred a shower to a bath but if we had booked earlier this would not have been a problem as most of the other rooms contained showers. The only word of caution I would offer is that reaching the top floor, where our room was, involved climbing quite a few steps - not for the unfit or disabled. I had been worried about the noise from the bar late at night as I am a light sleeper but it was not a problem - noise did drift up now and then but it was not too invasive and I certainly had a good night's sleep in the large, cosy bed - second hurdle cleared. Breakfast was very good. Whilst the main bar was not to my taste the small residents bar at the rear of the hotel was superb - small and cosy with a roaring fire - the perfect place to watch Israel overcome Russia. For dining out I would recommend the Thai restaurant in the old town hall - beautiful food and friendly people - but I would suggest booking a table early rather than leaving it to chance later in the evening. All things considered I thought the Churchill was a very good place for our weekend break and certainly good value for money.

“Avoid”

Churchill Hotel

We booked this hotel without looking at the Tripadvisor web site reviews. This was a real mistake. The reviews published on the site we booked through are censored - as was our review.

This place is simply not a hotel. It is a pub with rooms above it.

Very small car park at the rear of the pub (down a narrow alley), where double parking is encouraged by the staff. We ended up parking on the road to avoid getting boxed in. Staff reluctant to give location of the overflow car park mentioned in pub literature. When pressed could not give clear directions.

Staff were rude. Some examples being were, they went and checked (by looking out of the window) when we told them that the car park was full, were off-hand when we asked for no baked beans with our breakfast. Simple things like this. If this place was a hotel you would expect certain standards from the staff. These were just lacking here.

The bar was the reception area. There were no private resident’s areas (the review which states that Monty's bar is a resident’s bar is incorrect). The overflow area for breakfast (as the 'dining' area was far too small for the number of rooms) was the bar. The so called
security door between the bar and access to the accommodation was never closed properly (spring too weak to close lock) or clipped open. Access to the bar from the car park was passed the toilets (which smelt) or up the fire escape (which had a landing at the bar level used by the smokers - who flick their fag ends into the car park).

There was no consideration for the disabled or those with walking difficulties. No special parking spaces, no lift, etc. More steps than you want to count.

The rooms (at least the one we got) appeared to have been recently refurbished. We declined, to the very obvious annoyance of the staff member, the first room offered (was at the front and noisy because of
the main road, had a bath without a shower curtain, etc). Accepted one at the back. But later found out that it was above the smokers area (could hear them talking whilst the pub was open). At least the view was ok (hay something positive!). No clear fire instructions in room. No telephone, no hair drier, no products except for a cheap bar
of soap. Towels not changed daily - even if left on floor. Staff moved our products from sink and placed them next to toilet.

We can go on and write more but the best advice is AVOID.
