Everything that has been said about the Churchill hotel is right! It is just a pub with rooms and not a hotel however, the rooms are clean and modern; towels changed every day. Unfortunately no hairdryer but an ironing board with iron and a kettle with tea/coffee and biscuits, and a nice flat screen TV. The staff were friendly and were happy to move us (as I had commented about the noise issues but the room offered was smaller and we had paid for a superior room) The music did go off at 12.00, but we were directly above the speakers (Room 23) and the walls were vibrating! Breakfast was good and cooked to order. The location was very central and the car park was a bit tight but we moved to a side street after obtaining a parking disc from a shop (they were available everywhere if you asked) Most places closed at 10.00 during the week and 11.00 on friday and saturday, so get out early! Ambleside is not particularly cheap: fish and chips was £4.50 each, and a baguette £2.00. Plenty of nice cafe's for coffee and cake for about £3.50. We had a good time at this hotel but I am glad we checked out tripadvisor first!

the place has just been refurbished so rooms very clean but basic no hairdryer, no telephones and the showers not very good ,weak pressure to say they have just been refurbished and there is no bath installing power showers would have been better. its in a exellent location staff all very helpful and friendly very nice atmosphere meals where excellent you would have to have a very big appetite because the meals very large . The car park was a very tight squeeze but staff always on hand to move residents cars if you needed to get out .all in all very good place to stay and we will be back to visit

Stayed here with some friends over easter break, hotel has been recently refurbished, rooms were very clean & modern.

Food & drink served was excellent

The only issues/ problems we encountered were, the noise from the downstairs bar although it does stop @ 12 on the dot !, The bar is popular place for the younger generation and was packed full when the football was on.The carpark is very tight to get into and you will get blocked in by other residents, you have to be prepared to wait in a morning for the cars to be moved to allow you out.

“Lovely rooms, cannot fault the hotel.”

Stayed here the weekend before xmas and was very quiet! You do sign in at the bar area instead of a usual reception area but this did not bother us. we stayed in room 21 on the 1st floor right above the outside smoking area so it got very noisy at night. if you intend to be in bed before 12 then do not stay on the 1st floor! but they do turn the music off at 12- and the heating 2! our room was absolutely spotless, cannot fault it 1 bit. we had a huge bathroom with a seperate bath and shower! the maid even came in on the sat morning (only arrived on fri) and changed our towels! breakfast lovely. bar was quite lively at night time but no trouble. well situated in town centre, within walking distance of bakeries, pubs, shop and restaurants. overall the hotel was well worth the money and do not have anything bad to say at all! well worth the money! but like i said if you are looking for an early night make sure you are at the top of the hotel!

“Worries unfounded”

Our weekend break was booked by a friend and, after reading some of the earlier reviews, I travelled to Ambleside with some trepidation. My fears were unfounded. The 'narrow' lane to the car park was easily wide enough for my Celica which is not a small car - first hurdle negotiated. Check-in was simple with friendly staff and whilst it was strange to be asked to settle the bill at this point at least it saved having to do so on check-out. Our room was spotlessly clean and comfortable, in fact everything appeared to be brand new including the LCD tv. The bathroom was also excellent although I would have preferred a shower to a bath but if we had booked earlier this would not have been a problem as most of the other rooms contained showers. The only word of caution I would offer is that reaching the top floor, where our room was, involved climbing quite a few steps - not for the unfit or disabled. I had been worried about the noise from the bar late at night as I am a light sleeper but it was not a problem - noise did drift up now and then but it was not too invasive and I certainly had a good night's sleep in the large, cosy bed - second hurdle cleared. Breakfast was very good. Whilst the main bar was not to my taste the small residents bar at the rear of the hotel was superb - small and cosy with a roaring fire - the perfect place to watch Israel overcome Russia. For dining out I would recommend the Thai restaurant in the old town hall - beautiful food and friendly people - but I would suggest booking a table early rather than leaving it to chance later in the evening. All things considered I thought the Churchill was a very good place for our weekend break and certainly good value for money.
