I was really worried about staying here after reading the other reviews but I was very pleasantly surprised. The matter on which I agree with the other reviewers is the car park, it isn't very good at all, very difficult to get in and out of. Aside from that though it was great! Fab location, friendly staff, immaculate modern room. The breakfast was lovely but if the foods not to your liking you're spoilt for choice with excellent restaurants nearby. The main public bar is a bit loud but it shuts at 12, and the private residents bar is lovely. I can only say the other reviewers must be a bit miserable or have ridiculous standards. We had a fantastic time at the Churchill and will definately be going back!

    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — Look out for the entrance to the car park, its easy to miss. A little alley next to the hotel

£75 per room per night is dreadful value for what is essentialy rooms above a pub. 4th floor room was small - no lift - no soap or shampoo. Nightmare of a car park - easy to get blocked in - access by very narrow lane - may have to reverse out.
Breakfast was good as was the location but that is about all.

A terrible place. Poor staff, poor rooms, poor service, poor food, poor carpark. A long awaited holiday turned sour.

The staff are young and have no idea what a question is let alone how to answer one. Worst breakfast i have ever had in the Lakes by miles. Servicing of room amounted to a small clean towel placed on an unmade bed each day.

Just awful. Why run a hotel if you have not one intention to do even one thing that makes staying in a hotel nice?

Please do not take a chance on this one. I have visited over fifty countries on my travels and have never encountered such a shocking lack of value, service or cleanliness.

“Stay clear!”

This place was a real let down. It is basically a brash and noisy pub with a few very tatty rooms upstairs. Grossly overpriced and the rooms reek of stale tobacco. The car parking is terrible - a very cramped carpark at the rear of the building with a very narrow and dangerous blind exit onto one of the town's main streets. Spend your money wisely - go somewhere else!

Stayed at Churchill's for a weekend in July 06 with my husband. We'd seen a negative review on this site after booking, so arrived with some trepidation!

When booking, we'd been given a choice of one of the un-refurbished rooms for £60ish per night, or a refurbished one at £80 per night. We'd chosen the refurbished room, and it was absolutely fine. The decor is modern and unfussy, rooms were clean and had all the facilities we needed (large shower, TV, plenty of storage space and tea & coffee making facilities).

It's true that check-in takes place in informal surroundings in the bar, and that they wanted payment on arrival before we'd seen the room, but they had written to us beforehand confirming our booking and advising us that this would be the case.

The rooms are above a busy pub, but there was minimal noise at night (we were on the 2nd floor though, so this may be why).

Breakfast was a hearty full English - ideal preparation for outdoor activities in the Lake District.

All in all, we'd recommend it as great value for money in an ideal location.
