I came away with my boyfriend for a "romantic" weekend in Ambleside and like the couple in the review before was tempted by the website( we usually stall in the Smallwood Hotel which is fab but this was fully booked).

We paid £100 deposit on booking and were then asked to pay the £100 balance before we were shown to our room - I thought this very strange. The woman then showed us to our room, saying that we could bring back takeaways, wine etc to the room if we wanted - she took about 30 minutes telling us this when all we wanted to to do was unpack after a 2.5 hour drive and go & get some fresh air.

The room itself (4-poster bed) was quite big and had a lovely view of the front lawn (& the bunny rabbits which we were warned were "vermins"!!) but the bathroom was dingy, dirty, the loo-seat wasn't fixed on properly & there was just a cheap shower over the bath that didn't work properly.

The positive - it is only a couple of minutes from the town centre (& with free parking on site we could just leave the car & go walking).

Breakfast - what can I say, for the price we were seated in a dingy over-heated basement area & told to help ourselves to the "starters" - as long as you have only one glass of juice and do not want a selection of fruits, yogurts etc (as you normally see in B&Bs in Ambleside) you will be ok!! But the cooked breakfast - no choice on how you wanted your eggs cooked (& when they did come out they were hard as rocks) & I have never tasted sausages so cheap & nasty in my life - I could not face what was possibly in them. what about all the local organic produce available to them..............??

All in all, I am not an over-fussy person (& we did have a lovely weekend making the most of it all!!!) but it is overpriced, cheap & nasty -DO NOT STAY HERE (try Smallwood Hotel or Linwood House B&B).

We are four star rated by the AA, and as such have certain standards to maintain. We have just had a spot check by them whereby they book in and stay with us without informing us who they are. While in the room they inspect everything, even pulling the warbrode out and checking for dust behind. This inspection was passed with flying colours. Anyone wishing to see this report are welcome to do so, we do have a copy which we are willling to shown anyone on request. Everytime a room is used everything is checked, the only problem with the shower was the switch over from bath to shower was not done correctly, "user error". As for the orange juice you can drink as much as you like. Cereals, fresh fruit, prunes, grapefruit segments are self service, tea, coffee, and the cooked part of the breakfast are waitress service. as for the choice of eggs, you can have fried, poached, scrambled, boiled, or if you have any suggestions as to how you would like them cooked we will try to accommodate. Our bacon ansd sausage are all bought from a local butcher who sources local produce.

I stayed there as a birthday treat......! My fiancee booked this B&B due to the tempting homepage, and in particular the SPA with access to a healthclub, as well as a nice jacuzzi bath and four poster bed. We paid half of the total price on booking... for me a not very common practice.

We arrived, and the B&B looks really nice from outside.... but then

On check in we were forced to pay the full amount.... even before we saw the bedroom. 2 nights - 220pounds.

Finally the bedroom.. average, yes a four poster bed, and ok clean - but the bathroom; dirty, brown and black mould - we have pictures for a proof - hair in and arround the baths - I would not mind a old bathroom, but old and dirty?

In the evening we tried to shower, as the bath was far too dirty for a bath, but the shower wasn't working. We tried to contact the people, but the phone was occupied - for at least 50 minutes - we gave up after.

Next day, after a relly uncomfortable night, we had a great walk in an arround this beautiful area. On our return to the hotel we wanted to use the Health Club - Sorry, not between 4pm and 6:30pm....because it is a membership for a other hotel country health club.... and this is very restricted - 6 passes, and time restrictions.

OH man - the only time you would use a spa or sauna is in the late afternoon... after the walking!! And this is the time you are not allowed!

We were told by Penny, the owner that we stil can go there......although it was already 3:30pm.

The end of the storry, the Health Club staff send us away, as it was nealy 4pm.

We complained to Penny and Paul, but both were not interested....and we paid everything upfront. We didn't even a sorry!!!

We left Ambleside, we enjoyed the area and the hiking, but we will never go back and stay in a such unfriendly and dirty place.

Here at Ambleside lodge it is our policy to take payment on arrival. This couple were asked to do this and asked if they could see the room first, this was shown to them and they were very happy with it. The shower curtain was moved back to demonstrate the operation of the jacuzzi and the shower. At this point andy dirt would have been seen, The following morning the couple complained that they had tried to ring us at 11pm to ask if we could remind them how to work the shower. The shower does work the problem can only be with not knowing how to switch over from bath to shower. As far as the Health club passes are concerned this point is a little exagerated the passes were given out at 2.30p.m. but the couple did not arrive there until 4.10p.m. even though they were informed of the restriction. This restriction applies to ALL B&B and Hotels in our area who use the health club. As a final comment I would like to point out that all this couple asked for was £50 cash back and everything would be o.k.

Just returned from a three nights stay at the Ambleside Lodge. Hotel in well situated with good parking. Rooms adequate and clean, food ok. Be warned though if you have small children or love animals that one morning at around 7.30 I witnessed someone who was employed by the hotel shooting baby rabbits on the lawn of the hotel because they were a nuisance. I was horrified and stopped this man and grabbed the poor dead rabbit and took it to the Manager for his explanation. Also when returning from a day out I found that keys had been left in our bedroom door for anyone to go in and take anything out. In summary if you are an animal lover or value your security this is not the place to stay.

We have never employed anyone to kill rabbits on our property. This was brought to our attention on the day in question but we could not find anyone who would have been responsible. With regards to the question of security the keys were actually the guests set of keys, left in the door by the guest. I cannot say how long they had been in the door as we do not constantly walk around the building, but part responsibility for this lapse in security should be taken by the guest.

Just letting everybody know that I have taken this hotel to court and won because of the state of the accomodation supplied, it was smelt really badly and looked very shabby, they refused to move us and refused to refund so we took them to court, the lied all the way through but the judge seen through that and awarded damages.

Stay away from this one. my opinion of course but it took 3 court hearings to get justice and to show the lies from the owners.

My family an i have now stayed several times (2008) at the Ambleside Lodge bed and breakfast and have been completed overjoyed with the service.

The building is in a perfect codition and the general up keep is of a very high standard. The rooms are extremely well maintained and cleaned every morning and the positioning of the lodge is less than a very short walk to the town centre of Ambleside (less than 5minute)

The lodge offers breakfast that can be served in the room and delievery time is at the convenience of its guest. We had our breakfast brought to our room for 9.30am and the food was very well presented and fully satisfying.

My five year old daughter also found the staff and the building highly enjoyable and most mornings we sat in our private eating room, having breakfast and watched squirrels playing less than 5metres away in trees.

I would highly recommend the Ambleside Lodge for all types of guests and the staff are extremely friendly and helpfully with any needs or information about the area.

My family have enjoyed our stays with the Ambleside Lodge on all occassions and without the support of the staff our stay would have not been as pleasurable.

There is also easy secure parking, and the lodge also allows food to be brought into the rooms, and they will even supply cultery.

The rooms come with color tv/dvd player and a selection of free dvds to watch..

If anyone is looking to visit the beautiful Lakes District then i would recommend that they stay at the Ambleside Lodge.I have stayed at several bed and breakfasts in the Lakes District and all were very welcoming but the Ambleside Lodge is in a completely different level of standards and we give it ten out of ten.

kind regards
Roger Mance and family.
