My husband and I have recently spent four nights at The Waterside Hotel, Grasmere. We were with a coach party and I requested a ground floor room as my husband has difficulty in walking.
When we arrived at the hotel there were a number of steps up to the front door, To get to our room, we had to negotiate about 8 steps (there was a stanner stairchair but this was out of order on the second day). Our first impression of our room was very dark but clean. The only small window looked out onto a very small piece of ground, which looked like a rubbish tip, which was closed in by further bedrooms and corridors. When we saw the bathroom, there was a very high bath with a shower above the bath. My husband is unable to climb into such a high bath so I went to the reception desk and requested a room with a walk in shower on the ground floor as there was no lift in the hotel. I was told by the receptionist that "This is not a disabled friendly hotel" and there were no rooms with walk in showers.
On the positive side - the breakfast and evening meals were very good but it took two hours from 7.00pm until 9.00pm to serve the evening meal. There didn't appear to have enough waitresses. The ones who were serving were very efficient and very pleasant. The location of the hotel was magnificent - at the bottom of the garden was the lake.
On the whole we enjoyed our stay despite the disappointments regarding the room etc.
