“Not exactly what you call a relaxing spa!”

My boyfriend and I booked this hotel for one night as a birthday treat. I love health spas and have been to a few different ones - although as they can be pricey it is a once or twice yearly treat! So something I really look forward to.
Something that wasn't mentioned when I booked this hotel was how near it is to the A66 - literally just off the roundabout! So my illusions of relaxing in peaceful surroundings was shattered straight away. Although it is surrounded by trees which seemed to hide the road, and luckily our room didn't overlook the road direct. The hotel was clean with pleasant staff who were there to help at all times - our room was very hot and on ringing reception to discuss the discomfort within 5 minutes we had someone knocking on our door with a fan, which was impressive. The "SPA" leaves alot to be desired, could not fault the treatments or the relaxation room as they were both upstairs and provided a very calming atmosphere. However be warned the swimming pool (which is not as big as the photo makes out) the saunas, whirlpool and fitness suite are all open to children staying within the hotel, as well as whinging babies - something you don't want in a spa, as well as being open to the surrounding residents who come in for fitness classes in the very loud music studio. The pool area and steam room have just been refurbished which does look nice but the changing areas could do with been refurbished as the only private changing cubicle is in the disabled toilet where you have to make sure you lock both doors into the toilet in order to prevent someone walking in on you. My other problem with the "SPA" is that the lounge area has a plasma screen in which provides any sporting matches for those men that wish to escape their partners/families as when we walked in here was half a dozen men watching cricket - why is there a tv in a health spa? To me it should be an area of peace and relaxation.
Apart from that the food in the hotel was lovely and we could not fault the cleanliness in and around the hotel and the helpful attitude of staff. Stay here if you just want a hotel but go elsewhere if you are looking for a relaxing spa as this isn't one.

Spent two nights in April at this hotel would stay again had a lifesaving back massage which was excellent would recommend. The room was big and could not fault it in any way bathroom was also great had shower and bath was was lovely but on the last day we had no hot water not sure why this was didn't bother us as was checking out that day. Swimming pool was also very good. Did not eat at the hotel as was £25.00 each for two courses and you can eat very nice food in Penrith a lot cheaper. You can walk to Penrith town centre it takes about 15 minutes. Drinks at the hotel seem very expensive I had large glass of white wine and my partner had a pint of larger this came to £11.00 maybe if you have other drinks it is cheaper. The hotel is non smoking but you can smoke outside the hotel if you want. We had breakfast included in our deal but if you did not I believe it was £16.00 per person which seemed expensive. Pubs in the area I would recommend include Last Orders & The Woolpack
Service very good from staff and you had wireless internet access which was very useful to me.

“Wow Wow Wow!!”

Have to say that this is probably the nicest hotel I've stayed in in the UK - it certainly blows some of the 'larger chains' 5* hotels out of the water!
Stayed on a 2 night Easter break DB & B not cheap, but well worth it - the food was outstanding and service excellent, even though the hotel was obviously full. The staff were incredibly funny & friendly, adding 'little extra' touches that really made the stay special. Look out for Rene in the restaurant - a real character!
The pool area has been recently refurbished and was immaculate, subtly lit with blue lighting, and even though the hotel was completely full with families, it never seemed to be overrun by children. (Me & hubby are in our 30's and dont really cope well with kids!!) But I found plenty of space to 'chill' in the spa, pool area, bar & restaurant. That said, I think this hotel caters very well for children, with games rooms etc, the management had even arranged an easter egg hunt for them!

The spa suite, and treatments, were sublime with a lovely relaxation room - not cheap though!

Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone, a real hidden gem right on the lake district's doorstep. Have to agree with other comments on the hotel's exterior though - it did feel like I was arriving at crossroads motel.........once inside that was all forgotten, big chunky beams, log fires, pianist and squashy sofas!

Just Lovely!

“really good food and drink”

The location of this hotel is not that special, but it's close to the motorway so at least it's easy to find. There are some great locally produced food outlets and a huge weekend car boot sale nearby.
The restaurant uses very fresh local produce and although not cheap the food was excellent. Apparently the cellar was very well stocked too, according to our fellow guests who are wine buffs.
The facilities are similar to most hotel/motel chains, with little extras like free newspapers and roaring log fires and live piano in the bar.
It isn't cheap, but it's not a rip-off either - we enjoyed it and we plan to go back.

“Perfect Christmas”

North Lakes

Our Christmas at North Lakes Hotel was perfect thanks to all the well trained staff. On arrival we were put off by the appearance of the hotel, certainly painted the wrong colour, looked a bit "Hi de hi" from the outside.

However once inside "serendipity" with a lovely warm welcome from the receptionist, we were happy with our choice. Room 233 was a standard double, well decorated, cosy and all the usual toiletries in the bathroom although a bath robe would have been a bonus. Well stocked tray of beverages, bisciuts etc. plus a box of chocs, a lovely tin of gingerbread and for me a beautiful boquet of flowers, organised by the hotel. "Christmas was about to start" The food throughout our stay was excellent, delicious and well presented at all times by efficient courteous staff. One evening a magician entertained us at the tables and there was also a pianist. On Christmas Day Santa arrived with gifts for the children, (all of which were very well behaved.) On Boxing Day afternoon we were taken by coach to the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick to watch a play about Sinbad. Very enjoyable.

We met some lovely people who all appeared to be enjoying the stay as much as us. We also found time to enjoy the pool and Spa facilities which I understand is about to be refurbished. It was disappointing to leave but we will certainly be returning.

Many thanks to all who made our Christmas so enjoyable. Hope we can do it again next year !!
