My hysband and I spent a night at the Wild Boar last week. After reading some of the previous reviews, I wondered if I had made a mistake; however we had heard the food was excellent and decided to judge for ourselves. We booked via the English Lakes website and were quoted a rate of £64 per room which we paid in advance. On arriving at our room (no 2) it was enormous and had a king size bed, a separate sitting area and a large spotless bathroom with clawfoot bath. The heating was more than adequate which it needed to be as the temperature fell to -4 that night. We had an excellent dinner, using our Hi life card which gave us one meal free, and the service was superb - not intrusive but always easy to attract attention. My husband had the steak and kidney pudding and felt there wasn't enough gravy - on requesting a little more a well filled gravy boat was brought - he says the gravy was the highlight of his stay! Despite feeling in the evening that we would never eat again, breakfast the next day was again superb. On checking out it emerged that the room we had been given was £84 per night - the very helpful Scottish receptionist did not charge us the extra cost. We have stayed in numerous hotels in this area and would heartily recommend the Wild Boar both for its accommodation and its food. Note to the previous reviewer - creaky floorboards etc are part of staying in an old building - if you want modern, stay somewhere else.

We have just returned from an overnight stay at this hotel. Definitely will not go there again and certainly won't recommend it to our friends colleagues.

The only good thing I can say about this hotel is that the staff were very nice and willing to help.

The bad things are, we were promised on booking this hotel, a room with a 4 poster bed and a corner bath, this we didn't get. Our room, number 2, was in the first instant not easily found as the there were no signs on the walls telling us where it was. There were signs for rooms 3, 4, 5, etc but not 2. On asking a member of staff, we found the room along a corridor sign posted 26 to 28!

The room itself was a suite, desperately in need of an upgrade and in my opinion 'shabby'. The window frames were mouldy from condensation and the curtains were hanging off. The decor, I found, rather dingy, depressing and begging for a coat of paint. On entering the room it felt cold and damp. We turned up the radiators; well those that seemed to work, so that solved that problem. I don't think there was one floor board in the room that didn't creak. The lighting in the room was totally inadequate. I think all the lights and lamps must have had only 25w bulbs in them, the bathroom was bright enough though. The bed and pillows were like sleeping on a sack of potatoes so not a good night sleep at all. The bed linen was however clean and of good quality. One of the radiators was noisy, gurgling away at regular intervals during the night. Activity from staff/other guests early morning meant we didn't need an alarm clock. We could hear cupboards being opened and closed, footsteps on the creaking corridor floors and laundry trolleys being moved around outside our bedroom window. The bathroom was simple and ok to a point, but again, in need of some repair work. It was clean, the water was hot and the shower which was over the bath was good. The towels were clean and of good quality. The floor was ceramic tiled but the grouting was virtually non existent. The gaps between the tiles were deep and dirty and some of the tiles were cracked. Not a hygienic floor at all.

The restaurant I felt left a lot to be desired. The dining chairs were uncomfortable and difficult to move on the carpet which was filthy, shabby and in places down right dangerous. The food was certainly not value for money. Cheap cuts of meat made to sound gourmet. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice although the coffee was undrinkable.

The reception area and lounge were wonderful - especially with log fires roaring. The restaurant was superb and the food was first class. However we had rooms at the back of the building in the ugly extension which totally spoilt the point of staying in an olde worlde pub. Rooms were very noisy (walls extremely thin), no door on wardrobe, mould on bathroom walls and no net curtains in bathroom (ground level looking directly out on to the car park). Really spoilt the whole experience.

Stayed for my birthday, got room at reduced price £64.00.
Bed very comfortable and room (14) decent size, had door to outside but no key (previous occupant had taken it home with them)
Bathroom very small, nicely decorated but only a shower which had no power so just trickled!
Had meal in restaurant which was attractive and had a nice bar.
Chose slow roasted belly of wild boar for main course which was pork fat with crackling on top and about one small mouthful of meat, this was served with mash and cabbage and cost
£16.00. My husband enjoyed his salmon .
Breakfast was very nice, on the whole we quite enjoyed our night away but shower was a problem and my meal a bit disappointing.
Send off for a relish card before you go and get discount on food.
Hotel not suitable for people with walking problems as lots of stairs.

“Poor value”

Famous Wild Boar Hotel

We have just returned from a one night stay at the Famous Wild Boar Hotel. The price for B and B was over £ 100 pn, which did not bother us as it is supposed to be 4 star.

On arrival the premisis looked very good from the front. However as we made our way to the room, number 24, it was clear the place was in a very poor state of repair. The carpets were tatty loose and a trip hazard. This was however luxury compared to our room which was located next to the rear carpark.

Conveniently all of the leaflets were placed on the wall next to our door, allowing all of our converstaion to be heard as well as all of the conversations of the visiting American groupoutside our door.

The room was filthy and had not been hoovered as there was grit on the floor throughout. The room was tiny with just enough room for one person to walk to the bathroom at any one time.

The wall paper on ceiling was peeling off and the poorly painted wallpaper on the walls was marked and torn. The carpets were freyed and poorly fitted and made the room look even darker. It was a bright day but the light had to be put on at all times.

The TV was not tuned in and some channels were blank and others unwatchable.

The bathroom was clean and in good order except the shower which was cold and a mere drizzle. The glass in the bathroom window appeared to be held in by some filthy chewing gum type substance. The bedroom window was frosted and let in little light. When both the bathroom and bedroom window were open they faced into a private garden with a childrens play area, this gave no privacy when the windows were open.

The tiny wardrobe was also dirty and had marks and chips out of it, the wall behind was some type of tongue and groove wood affair, that looked miss placed.

The double bed was a good size but made up of two mattresses one soft one hard leading to a very poor night sleep followed by aching in the morning.

The crowning glory of the room was the noise from the paper thin rooms, we were subjected to a full night of buffalo type snoring from the room next door.

The evening meal was good if expensive, however my girlfriends vegitarian meal was a cop out nut cuttlet disguised as a vegitarian roast.

Staff were both polite and helpfull.

All in all very poor value for money. I do not know how a 4 star rating was obtained, this is more 2 to 3 star accomodation.
