My wife and I stayed here in Oct 2004 and it was quite simply excellent. We have a habit of poor service in this country but this place thrives on extermely good helpful and HAPPY staff members.
Being a relatively young couple ( 29 ) you usually find that these type of places try and appeal only to the walking dead. However I think the mixture of guests, surroundings and the infectousness of the good natured staff results in an extremely good place to stay.
Anyone who can appologise to the guests when asking them not to put any more logs on the open fire as the chimney was being set alight must be good!!!
The food is amazing, well worth trying, can't think of anywhere better I have eaten before.
Get a room in the inn part of the hotel, the floors are uneven, and the rooms cramp but they are extremely authentic. Fantastically olde world. However, the huge travelodgesque extention to the back ( admittedly hidden from view ) looks terrible. staying in this part would have gave me a completely different view of this hotel. The wild boar rifle needs to be used once more on whoever came up with the extention idea!
The leisure club you can use is a bit of a drive but is the best in the Lakes.
In summing up , it's like staying at a friend's house, its worn, well loved and perfectly balanced. It has a level of service that is very friendly but is neither intrusive nor intimidating. I'd stay here again, but if they put me in the travelodge section I will NOT be happy!
