My wife and I stayed here in Oct 2004 and it was quite simply excellent. We have a habit of poor service in this country but this place thrives on extermely good helpful and HAPPY staff members.

Being a relatively young couple ( 29 ) you usually find that these type of places try and appeal only to the walking dead. However I think the mixture of guests, surroundings and the infectousness of the good natured staff results in an extremely good place to stay.

Anyone who can appologise to the guests when asking them not to put any more logs on the open fire as the chimney was being set alight must be good!!!

The food is amazing, well worth trying, can't think of anywhere better I have eaten before.

Get a room in the inn part of the hotel, the floors are uneven, and the rooms cramp but they are extremely authentic. Fantastically olde world. However, the huge travelodgesque extention to the back ( admittedly hidden from view ) looks terrible. staying in this part would have gave me a completely different view of this hotel. The wild boar rifle needs to be used once more on whoever came up with the extention idea!

The leisure club you can use is a bit of a drive but is the best in the Lakes.

In summing up , it's like staying at a friend's house, its worn, well loved and perfectly balanced. It has a level of service that is very friendly but is neither intrusive nor intimidating. I'd stay here again, but if they put me in the travelodge section I will NOT be happy!

“Food great, shame the rooms aren't.....”

We stayed in one of the four poster rooms here in the old part of the hotel and the room was not great. The carpet in the corridor was loose and the furniture in the bedroom had a few handles missing plus holes in the net curtain. Despite this, the room was okay, nothing more. Sadly the bathroom was another story....it was a big room but the window was rotten, the carpet wasn't good (not a good idea for a bathroom), the suite/tiles are very dated and needed replacing (urgently!), the shower curtain wasn't long enough and the ceiling was covered in black marks and mould from the damp. Plus the toilet constantly sounded as though the cistern was filling. On a positive note, the food and staff in the restaurant couldn't be faulted though despite another reviewers comments, there was only a choice of 2 starters and 1 main course for vegetarians. We wouldn't stay here again until it had been refurbished.

Didn't stay over night but called in for 3 course evening meal. Food is superb - excellent vegetarian choice and plenty to keep everyone else happy. A thoroughly lovely place with cosy dining room and lounge.

“Fantastic food - rooms a little shabby!”

The hotel is ok and our room was very clean, just a little shabby and in definate need of a refurbishment. Room was located next to staff quarters in an ugly extension - if you visit make sure you ask for a room in the old part of the hotel as it can be noisy at the back! The food was fantastic though and worth going just for that!

We stopped here 28th Jan 05 for 2 nights witha 4 year old child. The staff were ever so friendly and kind, the service was absolutely fantastic. The rooms are not the Ritz but everything else makes up for it. The restaurant is also fabulous. We would definetely go back. It is very child friendly not like the restaurants in Windermere.
