Just had a night at the Beech Hill and, have to say, I can't really make up my mind. On the one hand, the hotel is very tired and dated. On the other, it is in a lovely location and has certain charms.
I booked a basic double room and, within 10 minutes, I was upgraded after complaining. There was a massive, dangerous tear in teh carpet right by the door, the hot water tap dribbled (at best) luke warm water, the bathroom window could be opended from ground level outside and the ceiling was damp and had leaked onto some of the furniture, which had not been changed.
The upgraded room was a whole lot better. However, the bathroom was not as clean as it should have been.
I had two coffees in reception and these were poor. However, the breakfast was excellent.
One of the problems, I think , is that they pay Eastern European staff very low wages and I imagine standards have dropped. This was clearly, once, a very impressive hotel.
It is a shame, but the hotel is very dated and tired-looking. For example, the swimming pool area was very cold and looked dirty, with old tables lying around etc.
Even the building outside looks like it is fading away. Strong management would sort this place out and a lick of paint would go down a treat. But not that bad, just don't expect perfection for the price.
