After reading several reviews on this hotel on this site, i decided to go ahead and book a 3 night easter surprise for my girlfriend. The first thing i must say, is that we got placed in the supposedly dreaded Room 118! after reading the review of this room my heart sank when we were taken to it by the staff. However, all the problems said about this room in particular, must have been either sorted out or were never that much of a problem to begin with. The room was quiet-there was no sound of the kitchen underneath, except for the odd bin being taken out, the room is warm but not overly so and was rectified by opening the window, which is well worth it due to the lovely views and the towel radiator in the bathroom seemed to work fine. The decor is how youd expect of an authentic country hotel and was very clean, and we found the room a lovely place to just sit or sleep and very relaxing. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom modern and clean. So in all, we have no complaints about this room at all.
Hotel: the hotel is very nice, set in a lovely location, overlooking the lake in the near distant, the gardens surrounding the hotel are immaculate and very well kept. The dining area, lounge and bar areas are very comfortable and very clean and there is enough car-park space for everyone staying there. its also about a 10-15 minute walk into the town of Bowness.
We had breakfast and the service was very friendly and the waiters and waitresses very polite, the food was very good. if we had one gripe about the hotel its a small one, in that the service for breakfast could be somewhat haphazard, there are a lot of waiters (and you will be served by all of them!) but therein lies the problem, as its obvious they have been told to sort the guests out asap, which is a good thing, but amongst themselves they dont quite always know whos done what, so one day we got asked 4 times if we wanted tea or coffee (after our order had been taken) and the next day not asked at all. It's not a major problem in itself, and obviously due to the fact that the waiters don't have a set number of tables to attend to and try to sort you out whenever they see something that needs to be done. most of the time the service was fine and i must say that the waiters and waitresses themselves were polite, kind and helpfull and nothing personal to them.
We also had a meal in the evening at the hotel, and they offer a wide range on the menu for fine dining. The whole dining experience there was lovely and the food cooked to a high standard, the setting was very relaxing and looked great with the lighting set low.
All-in-all i can thoroughly recommend this hotel, with lovely staff, lovely views and very good food. It achieved what i wanted it too which was a relaxing break in the Lake District for my girlfriend and on that basis alone, i would use again and keep in my address book!
