My husband and I vowed to return to Gilpin for our first wedding anniversary as we had such an amazing stay during our honeymoon and were so excited about returning.
I am delighted to report that we were NOT disappointed a year later. We stayed in one of the Garden Suites again (Crinkle crags) as we had fallen in love with the private decking and hot tub last year .
The room was pure luxury .The bathroom is stocked with molton Brown products which add such class and it is sparkling clean with soft towels and bathrobes to add to the luxiurus element.
One extra touch which would have pleased us even more if there were slipper type shoes provided to walk about the decking ,we stubbed our toes 3 times on the wooden chairs outside ! BUT I am being very picky now !
The attension to detail is superb ,huge choice in mini-bar inc fresh milk..Have cotton wool, body lotion ,remote control to adjust the lights ...i could go on ...but more to say .The staff even visit your room when you're dining to make sure the bed is made ready .
On to the food ,it is excellent and again the attention to detail here is amazing . The only little niggle was the dessert menu was exactly the same two nights runnings but again with such a wonderfull choice it didnt matter.
The staff are all obviously well trained in being courteus, professional and helpful. One staff member who was ,I belive more senior , was curt and rather cold in her manner which was a shame ,glad she wasnt around the second day.
Being picky again but some diners appeared to have been given the choice which room they would like to dine whereas we didnt, dont know whether this was a coinsidence but the younger guests seemed to have been all sat in the same room -can't decide whether I was impressed with this or not .
Also ,contrary to some reviews ,the hotel wasn't full of 50+ year old guests...guests varied from early 20's to 80's .
To be fair, when we asked the second night for a change where we ate ,the staff were obliging and it was a pleasenter, more relaxed dining area .
The main complaint which I must mention is that we were billed for three drinks we did not have (inc a 1/2 botle of wine ) thus we were overcharged £25.50 .It was so lucky we checked the bill before driving away ,but again ,in all fairness to the office staff ,I was refunded without hesitation or question .
We enjoyed our stay immensley ,this hotel i belive can hardly be beaten (unless I win the lottery!) .
Thank you Gilpin for giving us an anniversary treat to cherish -sure to be back :)

We stayed at Gilpin Lodge for our first wedding anniversary. Stayed in the Sergent Man room in one of the Garden rooms. The room was beautiful and the hot tub was sheer bliss (even in the rain). The small terrace was quite, tranquill and not overlooked (except by the pet larma in the field next to the room).

The staff were polite and service was good. Food was really nice especially if you like "fancy" food and being adventurous.

Staying in the garden suites made a perfect wedding anniversary full of luxury and romance. These rooms seemed to be more modern than the other rooms so were perfect for us, beautifully designed with dimming lights and an electric fire to add to the mood.

A great hotel for a special occasion. Thank you gilpin lodge!

“Sheer bliss”

We've just returned from a short stay at Gilpin Lodge to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and it met or exceeded all of our expectations. We stayed in one of the garden suites (Dollywagon Pike) and can confirm all of the positve comments about the accomodation. Modern, airy, roomy, luxurious, comforatble - just some of the ways I would describe it. The hot tub was excellent and a real highlight of our stay.

Dinner was exceptional on both nights with highly imaginative cooking without going into "snail porridge" territory. The wine list is extensive with helpful descriptions and something for everyone. There is a choice of 5 dining rooms all decorated in different ways but all to the higest standards. We didn't stay long enough to sample all of them - one more reason to go back.

The breakfasts deserve special mention. No buffet, which even at its best can be a bit cliched and tired. Instead everything is cooked or prepared to order with a huge range from full English to a taste of Jamaica!

In short, we had a thoroughly relaxing stay, in luxurious surroundings and found that the owners and staff took a real interest in customer satisfaction. We'll certainly be back.

“Not To Be Miissed”

Gilpin Lodge

We have just spent two days at Gilpin Lodge and once again, it did not disappoint. We stayed in St Sundays garden suite and sitting in the hot-tub sipping champagne is just one of the pleasures to experience. The rooms and the huge bathrooms are well appointed to the highest standard, you would be hard pressed to find better elsewhere. The highlight of any stay at Gilpin Lodge is dinner, the food is fantastic using locally sourced ingredients expertly prepared, cooked and presented with a different choice every evening. And if you plan to do some walking in the area, the Gilpin breakfast certainly sets you up for the day. It beggars belief that some reviewers think the place pretentious, far from it, from the minute you walk through the front door, a feeling of relaxation overcomes you. The staff are very friendly, unobstrusive but very attentive and nothing is too much trouble and the younger waiting on staff are a credit to whoever is responsible for their training.
The place is continually evolving, the lounge has been recently refurnished, with a new cocktail bar, wine cellar and outside seating area nearly complete. Whenever we drive off home through the gates, we are already looking forward to our next visit, so roll on August. (:-)

We stayed at Gilpin for one night to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary, It did not dissapoint. We stayed at the hotel 14 yrs ago before we had children! We remembered it with fondness and I was slightly apprehensive that it may not live up to our expectations this time.

We booked a Garden Suite, and are so glad that we did. The hot tub at night looking at the stars drinking champage was fantastic, and the room itself was of a very high standard.

It was the food though that made it so special. We arrived at the hotel early in the day and unexpectedly our room was ready for us. We then had lunch in the restaurant and it was excellent. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, and the service was excellent.

Then for the 5 course Dinner, which we found faultless. The food was delicious, and the service very good. The breakfast the next day was also superb.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a romantic getaway, with great food, service, no background music or noise, and beautiful surroundings.

We hope we dont have to leave it another 14years before we go back!
