This is a lovely hotel and when we got there Sue was very friendly and welcoming. We were a little wary of a few things because of some of the bad comments on this site but these people must be so uptight and picky. The room we stayed in (twin) was just the right size for a short stay, they were clean and comfortable. Now the bathrooms are small, but they are just fine, my mother and I are quite big women and we had no problems so if those shower rooms were too small for you then you need to think about going on a diet, not going holiday.
The breakfasts were lovely and plenty big enough, we skipped lunch every day because we were full. There was a lot of choice and they were very tasty. The dining room is perhaps a little small as some people had to sit with other guests and sometimes they didnt seem to happy about it. The B+B is 10 mins slow walk down to bowness where the lake is, and about 10 mins up to windermere, we found a lot more choice of restaurants in Bowness, and we had some really lovely meals. Overall we had a lovely stay here and would come back again if ever in the area.

The room was clean and tidy. The breakfast was fantastic, lots and lots of choice. The location is very good for Bowness, 5-10 min walk to the lake and the restaurants. Its also a short 5-10 minute walk to Windermere. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again if up that way.

“Nothing to hide”

St John's Lodge

I have been spurred into writing this review because the owners of St John's Lodge have printed out a number of negative comments made about them on this site and have displayed them for guests to read. I must say it is very brave of the owners to invite comment in this way but then again they have nothing to hide. In fact the comments have added a touch of humour in the dining room because everybody has found them quite amusing. I suppose there is no such thing as bad publicity.

I am a rep and visit the Lake District on a regular basis. I have stayed at St John's at least three times a year for the past ten years and have probably slept in most if not all of the bedrooms. I think therefore that qualifies me to give an objective and accurate statement of what the place is like.

First of all cleanliness at The Lodge is impeccable which for me is the most important thing. Bedrooms vary quite a lot in size, price and position but I have found this pretty typical of B & Bs in this price range. Some of the rooms are located on the second floor so if climbing stairs is a problemI suggest you mention it when booking. The majority of shower rooms are on the small side so if you veer towards heavy you may prefer to stay elsewhere. Breakfasts are as everybody says unbelievable. There is a choice of about 30 plus and the menu is for ever changing. Hospitality is always warm and welcoming. Barry, Sue and Julian are always available if you need them but are never over the top or in your face. I personally hate exuberant, joke cracking hosts especially first thing in the morning. Parking is not necessarily on the premises but there is loads of free parking nearby

I notice the folks who write negative comments always mention the house rules. As far as I know there are only two; No smoking and no coming in to the hotel after midnight. I for one appreciate rules like these and it was the main reason I booked St John's in the first place ten years ago. I always have a peaceful nights sleep without being disturbed unlike so many other B & Bs that I have stayed in.

I think St John's offers really good value for money and I can highly recommend it.

Had a lovely stay at St. John's Lodge. The welcome was warm and friendly - Sue and Barry could not have been more helpful. Everything was spotlessly clean and my room was very comfortable. The breakfast menu was amazing, and my choices were delicious. Bowness, Windermere and fantastic walks were within easy reach - what more could one want! I look forward to another visit.

“Worst place I stayed”

St John's Lodge

I did not like this B&B. It was the worst I have ever stayed in. Looking at the pictures of the rooms on the website, it seems nice but our room was nothing like this. I think we were overcharged because the quality of our room on the third floor (no elevator), was very inferior. The bed was so hard and lumpy, I bruised my hips laying in it. The shower was extremely small (good thing I'm not fat), and only had a curtain around it which stuck to your skin when wet. The view was a wall next door. A great disappointment. Very little convenient parking. The breakfast was the only good thing about it. Did not think the owners were very friendly or hospitable. Would not recommend it or ever stay there again.

What a puzzling comment! We do not have a third floor and we do not have any showers with shower curtains. Our showers do vary in size but one thing they all have in common is glass doors. We do not have any with curtains. Is this the phantom serial complainer at work yet again!

I have however printed out this comment and am displaying it at St John’s under the heading “£5000 reward for anyone who can find this elusive room.” If any readers would like to take up the challenge and claim the reward we look forward to seeing you. Now there’s a reason to stay with us!

I think the following famous line from Mark Twain is good advice to any would be amateur critic ‘Get your facts first then you can distort them as you please’
