On arrival, we were shown to a room which had a strong, unpleasant smell of fresh paint. The manager insisted that the smell came from the new carpet, but after a short investigation (another conversation with other staff in the manager's office) it turned out that the room had indeed been repainted 2-3 days before (both the doors - with oil paint - and the walls).
We were given half an hour to decide whether or not we wanted to stay in the room and the house - no alternative room could be offered. Our money would be reimbursed had we decided to look for alternative accommodation at that point, but that wasn't an option given that it was Easter weekend and all other BnB's in town seemed to have 'no vacancies' displayed outside. Reluctantly, we decided to stay and were given an air freshener. We were not offered a discounted rate for the room at the end of our stay.
We were reassured that the paint was non-toxic, but I am still planning on consulting my GP about it. Also, it is not clear to me why we hadn't been notified of the redecoration in advance, or not even told "the whole truth" about it right on arrival.

Thank you for letting our future guests know that St John’s Lodge is freshly decorated and re-carpeted throughout. I make no apologies for providing my customers with spotlessly clean newly refurbished rooms.
Regarding this guests concerns over his personal health due to the supposed inhalation of toxic fumes, I have contacted ICI paints and they have assured me that Dulux paints are not toxic. In fact it is against UK Health and Safety legislation to produce toxic paint. The Health and Safety data sheets are available to view on the ICI web site.
I suggest that rather than waste his GPs valuable time this character educates himself by reading these data sheets. Indeed it is blatantly obvious that if paint was toxic then we would have a lot of dead decorators on our hands. It also begs the question ‘what on earth does this customer decorate his own home with?’
This negative comment is merely the result of a very crude and unsuccessful attempt to secure a discount.
