“What a disappointment!”

We stayed at this hotel to celebrate my sister's 50th birthday. It is a big rambling lakeside hotel in between Windermere and Ambleside. Our room was fine - but it lacked all the amenities one would expect in a four star hotel like a fridge or minibar or really nice toiletries. The TV was pathetic - no BBC 3 or 4, or News24 or any other freeview channels or movie channels.
The hotel appeared to be thrown together with no planning. To go to breakfast or reception we had to walk through endless staircases & corridors and through what appeared to be the laundry room even though we were paying a premium for an upgraded room.
There were no plans for the hotel. To go to the 'leisure club' i.e. swimming pool and spa and gym we had to either leave the building and cross through a parking lot in the freezing cold or to charge through 2 and a half floors of staircases and corridors. The leisure club itself was barely adequate apart from the gym. The pool was small; the sauna and changing rooms were miniscule and the latter was wet and dirty.
Breakfast was a real disappointment. There was the usual range of cheap fried ingredients one would find in a cheap b&B. The only cereals were Kellogs. The bread was supermarket sliced bread. The only saving grace was that they immediately supplied my coeliac suffering niece with gluten free bread at dinner (but not breakfast). Dinner itself was good however but very expensive.
Considering this hotel was £128 a night for B&B only- it was shocking

Stayed at Low wood for one night, taking advantage of 41% discount on "feature rooms"

Room was clean but average. The "feature" was a rather old & clunky spa bath that had seen better days.

Be aware that the main Windemere to Ambleside road runs between the front of the hotel and the lake.....so if you opt for a lake view, you also get a lot of traffic noise. Not good at 5am.

Stay was average for half price, would have been very dissappointed had we paid full tariff.

We stayed at the Low Wood Hotel for 2 nights and when we arrived we found ourselves in Room 003 (ground floor fully accessible room at the front of the hotel) we did not require these accessible facilities. Our first impressions of the reception areas were high but when we got to the room we were very disappointed to find only a wet room (no bath) and two beds pushed together. This was meant to be a double room with lake views and when booking we specifically asked for a room where 2 beds had not been pushed side by side to make a double.

We approached reception who were helpful and said that there were no other rooms available and they would be able to zip the bed mattresses together to close the gap and cover it with another duvet so we would not feel the join, which they did immediately. The room was on the ground floor with cars (very noisy) driving passed the window which you could nearly touch. As the building is in a conversation area there was no double glazing, so be warned, you may have a lovely lake side view but the noise is another issue not mentioned on the website.

On a positive the breakfast service and food was great, they also allowed us to store our push bikes in the left luggage room over night.

The location luckily saved it for us, minus the busy road.

Just like to say that I stayed at Low Wood with my son his wife grandchilden and my sons wifes family my son went their last xmas and wanted me to join him this xmas gone, against a lot of fighting with my mind as to do this or go to the sun.I choose my family xmas here in England. so it was Low Wood here I come, and I must tell you it was Fantasic one of the best xmas's I have had in England.
You are greeted as soon as you arrive with friendly faces and a porter to help you,(great as I don't do stairs to well). My room had a lake veiw which was wonderful even with damp grey misty weather, you don't seem to notice it after an hour there by the way, my room had all I needed in it even a jar of mints oh lovely i thought.
My bathroom was also very good hot shower all the time very clean towels changed every day what more could you ask, bed made for you food cooked for you food served for you, we had tea and cakes served every afternoon the staff were so good they made you feel that they were there just for you and the hotel was full but all the staff have time for you it makes you feel so good Nevil has a lot of time for you as well( he's the manager in case you don't know) he is so helpful that you can see why the staff are like this as well.
As for the menu over xmas well it was excellent and so good for the waist line (I don't think so) but then you cannot count caloiers at Low wood and you wouldn't want to honestly. the themes that were put on over xmas were just great and all the hard work that went into this is atonishing, I had a fantasic xmas there with my family and also the other residents were just as friendly.
i have to say that i have not had a xmas here for many a year but to have one here and go to Low Wood is just a must.
so i say to you all if you havn't done xmas at Low Wood and you want to go wawy please think about this hotel it is EXCELLENT in every way possible, and to finsh all I will say is don't miss the chance if you have it to stay there, thank you one and all again for the xmas you gave me at low wood.best regards to you all pam

“Great views, but hotel could improve”

Low Wood Hotel

Some of my girlfriend’s family stayed here last Christmas and won a voucher that entitled the holder to a free weekend stay at the hotel any time during 2007 and they kindly gave it to me and my girlfriend. Booking with this voucher by telephone was a bit of a drawn out process that didn’t inspire confidence, and sure enough, when we arrived they had only booked us in for the Friday night and were full for the Saturday. On arrival we were offered either another free weekend or transfer to another hotel for the second night. We took the transfer option.

So, because of the above, check in took about 30 minutes and a queue built up behind us, so more manpower on reception would have been helpful for the other guests.

Our room, as requested, had a lakeside view, that was wonderful, but to be honest, for the price this place charges, the room was far too small and would have benefited from some modernisation.

We went down to the bar/lounge area for a drink before dinner, this section all looks brand new and a waitress brought us our menus to choose dinner items whilst in the lounge.

Dinner is in a large hall which is pleasant enough for us Brits, but I should imagine that overseas visitors would be very impressed by it. The food was fine but nothing exceptional, although I do recommend the local cheese selection served on a slate.

Morning arrived, once again, lovely view over Lake Windermere with the early morning mist, acceptable, but not exceptional breakfast and time to check out. Check out process once again took forever during to issues with the bill, i.e. trying to charge us for drinks that we didn’t have at dinner and the usual queue formed behind us.

The best thing that they did was transfer us to the other hotel (see review for Lakeside Hotel) as it was far superior.

OK, so I stayed there for free, apart from the drinks bill, but to be honest I don’t think that you get value for the price they charge per night, confusion and understaffed at reception, large sections of the hotel needs modernising/repairing and the food is nothing special. I think that this hotel is really trading on its location as it is right next to the Lake (albeit with the road in-between) and the view is without a doubt spectacular.
