I have stayed here a couple of times over the past years, and what a breath of fresh air NOT to be ripped off. (I often have to tell businesses in the Lakes, that I am neither American nor Japanese, so don't even try to think of ripping me off.....{many Lake District businesses prey on our American and Japanese cousins, because they assume they are loaded with cash})
The hotel is pleasant, convivial, and the rooms are lovely. The prices are excellent. I have just laughed at reviews for 21 The Lakes on trip advisor, it used to be called the Dalegarth, now tarted up as a quasi pseudo "bouquet hotel" ha ha!.
Do your self a favour, save hundreds of pounds, and stay at the Ellerthwaite Lodge Hotel instead!

A good base for exploring the Lake District, Windermere is one of those places with row upon row of B&Bs and hotels. As we hadn't booked we had to do a bit of searching for one with a vacancy. This place had a sign outside saying "special rates tonight", or something, and when we enquired about a two-night stay we were told 62 pounds a night for a twin room. When we dithered a bit she reduced it to 60.

The room was perfectly adequate. The bathroom showed signs of age, but everything was clean and up to scratch. Breakfasts were very satisfactory with a good range of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, juices, etc. Rather than the usual full breakfast with the works I opted for scrambled eggs, which were done to perfection.

We'd be happy to stay here again.

Arrived into town not having booked anywhere to stay so was really happy with what we found at The Ellerthwaite Lodge Hotel.. Roger is very friendly and helpful .. the room was really great with a nice new bathroom.. ( just watch your head on the beams ! ... but adds character to room i think ) .. Breakfast was served quickly with a good selection and was just enough to keep us going for our drive home... All in all a nice hotel .. clean and comfortable and we will definately be passing it onto all our friends and no doubt we will be returning.

We have just returned from a short break in the Lakes and stayed at the Ellerthwaite Lodge. The weather was pretty miserable but the hotel more than made up for a bit of rain.

It's a medium sized hotel with a small bar area and two dining rooms. Breakfast was wonderful - choice of fruit and cereals followed by several options for hot food with the Full English being tasty and satisfying but not overwhelming, served on piping hot plates in the very tasteful breakfast room.

Roger, the owner, was an excellent host and we were made to feel most welcome.

The location is fairly central - on the main road in Windermere near to Bowness. We found Bowness to have more places to eat and drink in the evening than Windermere- it was about a 15 minute walk or a £3 taxi ride ( beware the walk back is uphill!) You can choose to eat in the hotel but we didn't see anyone in the dining room in the evening so I assume most people eat out.

All in all a lovely stay at a very friendly establishment that is good value for money.
