We stayed at the Carousel Hotel (South Shore Blackpool, A Sleepwell Group hotel) in September 2006 following a dinner function on the Saturday evening.
There is very little parking at the hotel, just a small yard at the back and if that is full then you have to try and find a place on the road in front of the hotel. We arrived to find that the police had just visited because some guests had reported a theft on the Saturday morning.
The room was satisfactory, but the carpets in corridors throughout the hotel were a pale colour and showing the dirt. The room door did not automatically lock on shutting, one has to use the key to lock it from the outside when leaving the room and it was awkward to be positive it was locked properly (more on that later).
The function was well organised and the staff and manager made efforts to make it a enjoyable occasion.
At about 08:30 the next morning, Sunday, the fire alarm went off and the whole hotel was evacuated and the fire brigade arrived. Not an ideal way to start the day after a party the night before.
When it was confirmed as a false alarm we went back to our rooms. One of our party found that £60 cash had been stolen from a wallet in the room which was then reported to the police. Whether the room door had locked properly or not is uncertain. However it did appear that the fire alarm was deliberately set off to get all the guests out of the rooms to set up the thieving opportunity. The thief probably walked the corridors trying all the doors. Whether this was done by hotel staff or outsiders cannot be determined.
That there were thefts on consecutive days does seem to indicate that this hotel has a chronic problem with thieving and that its security methods are not of a good standard.
