Best Western Bentley Hotel & Leisure Club

I am an ex-pat who comes to UK four times a year and I stay at the Bentley frequently. It has a good position, with access to Lincoln in 10 mins or so depending when and how you go, and also easy access to M-ways etc. Carpark is free and hassel free as you would expect from an out of town location. Rooms are nicely kept, cleaning staff friendly as are night people (good for me as I work late). OK bar has no atmosphere - I usually dart in there for a quick one or a take out. Never eaten in the dining room (good curry houses near by), but had a plate of chips once and came with dressing and all the extras - was fine. Never, used all the fitness stuff but looks good. All generally good but two cons; WiFi is rubbish, they always blame it on the weather or say it has 'been playing up' etc - but it is not true - it simply doesn't have the range. They do posess at least one plug in range extender which allowed me to use WiFi, but I only got this after some negotiation. I wish they would sort that out. Second con is that as a smoker, I only stay in hotels which allow smoking and it is impossible to guarantee that you will be allocated a smoking room online or in advance. I have for example asked for a smoking room in the past in the 'notes' part of the online booking form only to be told when I arrived late at night that the room is non-smoking. I went elsewhere (there are quite a few hotels within a couple of mins. driving) but I learnt not to book the Bentley in advance but book somewhere else - then ring the Bentley on the day and if they guarantee a smoking room - cancel the other booking. But sometimes, I simply don't bother and end up staying somewhere else.
If they would sort out these two problems I would give them an above average rating and they would get more bookings as a good standard road tavern. As it is they are always second choice.

I am a UK expat who returns to the UK infrequently on business trips and have stayed at this hotel a couple of times in the last six months.

As per previous reviews this is a glorified travelodge next to a busy road junction on the outskirts of Lincoln, and you will need a car if you want to conduct business meetings / visit sites anywhere outside of Hykeham. The parking is indeed free but lets face it it should be given location.

The food in the restaurant is expensive but the food / service is far above the standard I expected and offers both local disches as well as french / italian standards.

The bar is a bit spartan and lacks any soul, and on both occasions we visited there were large meetings being held within the 'conference room' areas leading to an overspill into the foyer/bar area. The rooms are clean (by uk standards) enough, you are next to a busy road so take ear plugs if you can't sleep without the window open
The front desk service could be a little bit friendlier and how about updating the computer system so that guests don't have to fill in home address details each time they visit?

PS - if by any chance you are a returning UK expat on a short visit check out the huge superstore just up the road....

“Best Western meets Travelodge.”

Best Western Bentley Hotel & Leisure Club

1 Oct 2007

The Bentley is really an upmarket Travelodge located conveniently off the main A46 at North Hykeham, about 4 miles from the centre of Lincoln. I stayed on two separate weeks in July and August on business and I agree with other reviewers about the intrusive traffic noise.

The rooms are as they should be at this price point, comfortable with en-suite facilities, free toiletries and space to work. Wi-Fi is available but watch out for charges which can be added to your bill without notice. I'm told by colleagues that the leisure facilities are very good and they do seem popular with non-residents, particularly in the mornings.

My only grouse about this hotel is the restaurant, meals were over-priced and offered poor value for money. The bar snacks on the other hand are very good, but for some reason must be taken in the room after 5.30pm (additional £2.50 charge for room service per meal - clever!). The breakfast is buffet style with a wide selection of juices, cereals, pastries and traditional cooked fare which is also very good.

The staff are generally pleasant and helpful but can display that Best Western take it or leave it arrogance when guests correctly query their bill.

Also in the vicinity there are two pubs neither up to much, a MacDonalds and further down the road into Lincoln, an Asda with a cafe and further down again on the right in a small shopping area, a Fish & Chip restaurant which stays open until 6.00pm and which I can recommend.

I travel regularly on business.

Good points - free car parking, room size and facilities, and staff are very friendly for the most part. Standard of rooms definitely above average. As a smoker who refuses to be browbeaten, I must also applaud the Bentley for retaining some smoking rooms. It's quite legal, they're not public areas.

But then they go and let themselves down; given the wrong timings for dinner on the Sunday night that I arrived; I went in for dinner in a pair of tailored shorts, only to be sent out to change, because they contravened the dress code. Now, I was the only person there, or I would have been if they'd let me in, so I then checked every scrap of literature in my room, and nowhere does it mention a dress code. The bar is adequate, but entirely soulless, and not where anyone with a personality would want to spend any time, which made it even more irritating when the Wi-Fi broke down 2 nights out of the 3.

In summary then, it's ok, but needs to pay a lot more attention to detail.

We stayed at the Best Western for a nearby airshow, so were basically in the hotel evenings only and didn't try the leisure facilities (which appear to be good.)

First the good, the staff are friendly and in the main, professional. The place was clean and the parking great. The food in the restaurant is slightly expensive, but very good - much higher standard than most travel lodge style places. Thereby lies the issue - Apart from the food, there's nothing to distinguish it from a generic large chain hotel. It is significantly more expensive and actually inferior in a lot of ways. Picking up on issues experienced in other reviews, and in no particular order:

Hot water - Water never got warm enough for a comfortable shower in either of the rooms our party occupied.

Soundproofing - A lot of road noise and walls so thin we were woken by next door's alarm clock (trust me - you're not going to be sleeping through it in your room!)

Location - Although its handy for the Waddington air show, it's quite a hike into Lincoln city.

Overall, I'd recommend if you're overnighting for the air show (but remember the lack of hot water if it's a cold, wet year like this one) or are using it as a business base and not paying the bill, but wouldn't use it as a tourist base.

Cheers
