This is a bit of a mixed review.
The first surprise came when we realised we had to be checked into the hotel by 22:30 – as apparently they don’t have a Night Porter, and that is when the Receptionist leaves.
We arrived with 10 minutes to spare, and were shown to our room. Or possibly a broom cupboard with a bed in it. It was tiny – especially for £90+ a night. The bathroom was worse, and I had to perform a complicated dance round the toilet in order to open the door!
The tiny portable television didn’t even have a remote control. I did enquire about this later, and was told they would find us one, but no remote ever turned up.
In the morning, we drew back the curtains to see the view – of the local graveyard!
We upgraded after the first 2 nights to an Executive room, which was much pleasanter, and more acceptable for the price.
The first 3 mornings we were there, there were only 2 or 3 other people in the Breakfast Room, and breakfast itself was very nice.
On the 4th morning there were another 12 people at the same time, and this was obviously too much for the staff. Many buffet items ran out and were not replaced (orange juice, pastries etc), and the cooked breakfast took almost an hour.
Possibly the most annoying factor was that the owners keep a dog that barks – a lot. It was let out at 6.00am on 3 of the mornings we were there, and we were woken with the loud barking. It is difficult to believe the owners could be so thoughtless.
Generally though, the stay was fine, the staff being extremely pleasant and helpful. The rooms were warm, and the beds comfortable. Tea, coffee and biscuits were plentiful.
The Hall itself has a slight air of being down-at-heel but very genteel.
Would we stay again? Possibly, if we had an upgraded room. The ordinary room was way overpriced though, and I wouldn’t consider staying in one of those again.
