I’d forgotten hotels like this existed. Shabby, tired and gloomy – and that was just the public areas. Our room had worn-out furniture, cracked and crumbling window frames (as another reviewer noted), a tiny bathroom with faded lino on the floor. In short, the place needs a major rehaul. What was truly shocking (apart from the price - £85) was that it was full. Given the number of golfers around and the fact that there’s almost no competition locally (The Petwood is far better, but more expensive), the Golf is one of those dreadful hotels that limps on and on, never improving, never getting so abysmally bad that no-one will stay there, just continuing to make money for its owners who clearly see no point in channelling any of it back into the hotel. The one positive thought we took away was that there was a time, and not that long ago, when most provincial hotels in the UK were like this one. Times have changed, thank God.
