“relaxed”

Branston Hall Hotel

1 Apr 2008

I booked this hotel for a relaxing spa retreat as a treat for myself and a friend. I was not in the slightest bit dissapointed. The hotel was fabulous, the bar was friendly as were the other relaxing areas, reading rooms and pool. We had the pool and spa to ourselves. The food was very good indeed and the portions sizes were perfect for me to be able to fit in 3 courses! Breakfast was very relaxing, the atmosphere was friendly and the poached eggs were cooked to perfection. We followed this up with a few hours at the simpsons spa on the hotel site and this was fantastic. I really enjoyed the whole thing. The only downside was that the hotel rooms were very very warm! But thats it, the rest was great.

“Good in parts”

Branston Hall Hotel

2 Oct 2007

We stayed here as wedding guests, and found we had room 201. A previous reviewer has already written about room 201, and sent illustrative photos, so I don't need to describe it. Suffice to say it is very restrictive for two, and difficult to ventilate as the tiny window is set in a corner. The room was clean, as was the rest of he Hotel. The staff were generally polite and cheerful.
At breakfast time the next day we were disappointed to find the hot items were not freshly cooked. We could pick cold items from the usual cereal/fruit buffet. Toast and tea/coffee arrived at the table. We could then choose from hot items at another buffet, served by a schoolboy taking his weekend job very seriously. One sausage, one leathery rasher of bacon, one tomato half...etc. No chance of having two sausages even if we didn't have bacon. We think a country house hotel of this standard and charging the sort of money we paid should be serving freshly cooked breakfasts with more choice. We have stayed in Guest houses which present a far better breakfast!
The wedding reception was great fun and conducted efficiently and with a light touch. The wedding meal was excellent . Also the bride and groom were delighted and that's what matters.

“A big disappointment”

This could be a great hotel, instead it was a big disappointment. We booked two rooms for an overnight stay. The hotel is a ten minute drive from Lincoln.
First the good. The hotel is in a beautiful old building in a great park like setting. The hotel has a great deal of charm and the common areas are very nice. The bathroom had been nicely redone. It had a round tub for two located in a turrent in the bathroom. The tub area had two windows looking out on the trees.
Now the bad. The room furnishings looked like they were picked by your elderly grandmother. Some tasteful furnishings could have made the rooms very charming. The hotel has a form for you to fill out relieving them of liability for the thermal heat from the hot tub and thermal pool. However, they did not need to bother. When we were there neither worked since the water was barely lukewarm and hardly close to thermal. Upon telling the desk clerk of this problem, they were unaplogetic and offered no effort to correct the problems. The stay included a hot breakfast, which was a buffet. This is fine unless you want your eggs other than fried. The breakfast food was fine, and since it was a buffet you could have as much as you liked. Altough the worst was when we went to breakfast, we were directed to a table where people had just finished, and they noted they would reset it up for us. Their idea of setting it up was to brush off half of the crumbs from the people before us and leave the stained and used tablecloth, crumbs and all for us to enjoy. This proved to not be the exception but rather the rule. We watched as they did the same thing with other tables, to the point of checking the unused silverware left on the table and deciding if it was suitable to leave for the next diners, rather than removing it and providing all clean silverware. We brought this to the attention of the desk staff at checkout and were assured this was not common practice and would be dealt with however I'm not sure I would trust that answer. On another note, we had sandwiches in the bar for dinner one night and the food was terrible.
The setting and charm of the hotel could make this a great place, however, the service, room furnishings, and management leave a lot to be desired.

“Over-rated, shabby, rip-off room rates”

Branston Hall Hotel

We booked into Branston Hall for two nights for a family wedding because the reception was being held at the hotel. Having booked as part of the wedding party directly with the hotel several months in advance, we were offered a so-called luxury double room @£135 +VAT per night. The room and bed were very small, the bath/shower did not drain properly and handles fell off the drawers. Public areas in the hotel are cluttered, worn and really quite dingy. However our main dissatisfaction was the cavalier pricing to various members of our party. For double rooms, others had paid £110, £85 etc compared to our £135, whilst another person had been charged only £79 for a large double suite and single occupancy. All this to a group who were already paying several thousand pounds for a substantial wedding reception and evening event. When we queried room charges, the staff were adamant and effectively told us off for booking direct with the hotel, indicating that we should have booked with an agent on-line!!! Attempts to argue that a consistent rate should have applied to the wedding party and/or that perhaps they should be more gracious to direct bookings - secure business, well in advance, no agents' fees etc - met blank stares and a repeated, robotic response that the completely variable prices "'are the system here".

Squeezing customers also appears to extend to the restaurant menu. Main course for dinner in the restaurant is £14.50 but almost everything carries a supplement eg £5.50 for steak. That said, the food was reasonably OK.

Altogether a less than satisfactory experience, in particular the atitude of senior staff. We will not visit again - caveat emptor!!!
