We booked into Branston Hall for two nights for a family wedding because the reception was being held at the hotel. Having booked as part of the wedding party directly with the hotel several months in advance, we were offered a so-called luxury double room @£135 +VAT per night. The room and bed were very small, the bath/shower did not drain properly and handles fell off the drawers. Public areas in the hotel are cluttered, worn and really quite dingy. However our main dissatisfaction was the cavalier pricing to various members of our party. For double rooms, others had paid £110, £85 etc compared to our £135, whilst another person had been charged only £79 for a large double suite and single occupancy. All this to a group who were already paying several thousand pounds for a substantial wedding reception and evening event. When we queried room charges, the staff were adamant and effectively told us off for booking direct with the hotel, indicating that we should have booked with an agent on-line!!! Attempts to argue that a consistent rate should have applied to the wedding party and/or that perhaps they should be more gracious to direct bookings - secure business, well in advance, no agents' fees etc - met blank stares and a repeated, robotic response that the completely variable prices "'are the system here".
Squeezing customers also appears to extend to the restaurant menu. Main course for dinner in the restaurant is £14.50 but almost everything carries a supplement eg £5.50 for steak. That said, the food was reasonably OK.
Altogether a less than satisfactory experience, in particular the atitude of senior staff. We will not visit again - caveat emptor!!!
