After an exhaustive search, we chose the Aster House. Many very positive points:
- lovely townhouse on a quiet street
- 3 minute walk to South Kensington Underground stop (you can take one train directly from Heathrow to this stop)
- lovely Continental breakfast. It wasn't a big American breakfast, but it wasn't a cholesterol-clogging English breakfast. It was basically a Continental breakfast (plus scrambled eggs), but with fresh fruit, interesting breads, beautifully displayed
- 15 minute walk to Harrods and V&A museum (plus other museums)
- gracious staff
- excellent value (London is expensive, but Aster House is a great deal)
- a small grocery store around the corner that is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The only negatives:
- the downside of a B&B is not having a front desk to ask questions to. You could always call someone on the phone and they were responsive, but not the same as a 24 hour desk.
- no elevator (no problem for me, but could be a problem for those with climbing issues)
Rooms were nothing special, but were clean and had whatever you would need. (I don't think there was a minibar, but with the grocery store around the corner, you could pick up water, etc easily.)
If I were going back to London, I would not hesitate to stay at Aster House again.
