I recently spent another week in London and this time, I decided to try the Doubletree Tower of London (formally known as the Mint). It's location is the virtually the same as the Grange, Apex and Novotel, just north of the Tower of London and west of the Tower Hill tube station. Check in was smooth and the service was very friendly. The hotel is relatively new, only a few years old and still maintains that new look. However, there is a lot of concrete, glass and steel in the lobby which gives it more of an industrial look (kind of like and airport almost) as opposed to a comfortable rest stop.
The rooms are small, as you would expect from a City hotel, but what struck me was the relative cheap quality of the furniture. The desk and closet look to have been pieced together from an Ikea catalog. There is a iMac on the desk that you can use as your TV and computer if you'd like. The idea is pretty impressive, but the practicality is not. The remote was a pain in the butt to use if you knew which channell you wanted. Just like a iPod, you need to scroll through the whole list of channels to get to the one you want, instead of just selecting the channel number. Unlike most of the other hotels in the area though, the Doubletree has free WiFi, which will save you about 15 pounds per day. The bed was comfortable, but be sure to ask for different pillows if you're used to sleeping with softer ones, like I am.
If you're here on business like I am, you won't spend a great deal of time in the hotel room, so just be sure that your night's sleep is as comfortable as you can get it. There is a great work out facility on the second floor that is fairly easy to get space at. The best part of the hotel is an amazing roof top bar that overlooks the Tower of London. The drinks are fairly pricey, but the view is spectacular. I paid about 180 pounds for the room, exclusive of VAT and that was about right. Like any other hotel in the area, don't waste your money on eating at any of the restaurants located in the hotel. There are a ton of better and cheaper places within easy walking distance. Save your money for drinks on the roof.
