I've had the opportunity to stay at this hotel on a number of occasions this year and for the most part the stays have been excellent. I was spoilt on my initial visits with complimentary upgrades to a suite but have since been a little 'disappointed' with the allocation of the standard rooms which have also been badged as an upgrade.
The hotel is well situated in Pepys Street which is off the main roads close to Tower Hill tube station and Fenchurch Street mainline station. The main entrance to the hotel is quite impressive with a large dimly lit (some would say atmospheric I'm sure) lounge area with the reception desks situated on the right hand side.
The majority of my check in experiences have been very good with the staff being warm and friendly (with one notable exception) and of course, the added bonus of the warm Doubletree Chocolate cookie.
The suites are quite sizeable rooms with their own lounge/dining area with chair, sofa, table, integrated Apple TV/PC with BOSE sound system, tea & coffee facilities and mini fridge.
The bedroom area has a huge 'triple' size bed with another, smaller, integrated Apple TV/PC wardrobe and standard size laptop safe.
The bathroom has a shower and bath as well as a wc and sink unit.
Standard 'upgraded' rooms don't have the additional living area and also have a smaller size double bed, which is effectively a larger base with two single mattrasses on top of them and in reality can become quite uncomfortable if you end up sleeping in the middle of the bed.
Standard rooms are also provided with tea/coffee making facilities (without the posh coffee bags & posh biscuits), Apple TV/PC combination, wardrobe with laptop safe and a smaller bathroom which contains a shower cubicle, wc & hand basin.
All rooms I've stayed in so far have had Internet access through the TV or there is wifi available throughout the hotel.
If I'm being completely honest my only real criticism of this hotel is the size of the standard rooms which, in my view, are no bigger or more comfortable than those you'd find at most newer Travelodges or Premier Inns.
The hotel breakfast is a combination of a la carte cooked to order items and a range of cold buffet items such as cereal, fruit, yoghurts, pastries, fruit juices etc. I've noticed on a number of occasions that the waiting staff aren't necessarily aware if you are on a breakfast inclusive rate and may try to charge you. On the whole the breakfast staff are very attentive and you are greeted at the door with a smiling friendly welcome.
Hotel dinners are a fairly standard Hilton type offering with the odd 'local' dish added for good measure. Again the waiting staff are very attentive and look after you very well and I've always found the food to be very good if a little expensive (but you are talking London hotel prices).
Room Service food also tends to be a standard Hilton style menu with sandwiches, burgers, steak, curry etc. on offer. For the most part the room service food I've had has been excellent and delivered very quickly and has stayed reasonably hot - again something to look out for is the tray charge of £5 for delivering the food to your room (I'm reliably informed that it isn't a tip!).
The hotel also has no swimming pool although it does have a very small gym on the second floor with a limited variety of equipment.
A car park is also available at the hotel but be aware that the cost is around £30 per night.
Most of my check out experiences have been very good and the staff have been very efficient at resolving queries and bills have generally been accurate.
Overall I like this hotel for a number of reasons; its location; proximity to the underground; parking facilities; food and the fact that it has a few 'stand out' staff who make for a better all round experience at the hotel. I understand that there are people who like the deferential approach offered by most hotels, but personally I prefer it when the staff are more interactive.
