Unfortunately one of the worst hotel stays we have ever experienced. We had read reviews saying that the rooms were small, but plenty saying that they were fine too, so we decided to book Russell Court. Big mistake, or rather, tiny mistake! We were given room 305, which is the smallest room we have EVER seen. If you can imagine a VERY small SINGLE hotel room, like tiny, then stick a double bed in it and call it a double room, and hey presto! Room 305! The room was a little shy of 8ft x 7ft in size, so technically you can squeeze in a small double bed, and have just over a foot either side of the bed, and just under 2 foot at the end of it, but that is all. Add to that the outside wall is a slight dormer, so it has a slope, meaning it is quite tricky to stand up straight without falling onto the bed!
The bed itself, for our liking, was not at all comfortable, too hard, and not big and firm and supportive hard, but just cheap and nasty hard. We had to ask for extra pillows and an extra duvet, to put underneath us, to make it bearable.
They have attempted to modernise the hotel with fancy new bathrooms, and new paintwork on the walls, and to be fair, the tiles and bathroom suite are very nice, but whoever fitted them must have been the most heavy handed and short sighted bathroom fitter in the country, as about 20% of the tiles are cracked, and the sealant is very, very messy. Also, the bathroom, like the bedroom, is too small; you need to tuck yourself underneath the sink when sitting on the toilet!
On the plus side, the small breakfast room in the basement was fresh and bright, and the continental breakfast itself was pretty good. And location wise it was pretty good too, only about 200yds from Olympia underground, which runs during the weekends and bank holidays, so good for our stay.
We would not look to stay there again, unless we could be guaranteed a larger room! The hotel definitely needs to accept that the rooms ending 05 are only small single rooms, and sell them as such, and swap the beds over for single beds. (And advertise that even then they are small single rooms, as I for one have stayed in many single rooms that were twice the size).
All in all, 1.5 out of 5 we are afraid.
Do not get rooms ending in 05!
