“London's best value?”

City Inn Westminster

Don't bother asking if hotels are good or bad, it's really a question of whether they're good or bad for the money. Well having stayed in fifty London hotels during the past five years, this one gets my vote for best value of all - that is provided you can get a room for £99 including breakfast.

City Inn ticks all the boxes. It looks smart and new, the staff are cheerful and try hard, the restaurant and bar surpass expectations (some of London's best cocktails), the rooms are comfortable and hi-tech (ten separate lights in mine). Free internet in the room (not wi-fi strangely, you have to ask to borrow an ethernet lead at the desk). Nearly a hundred channels on the TV.

The buffet breakfast is modest in size but great in quality. Even jugs of raspberry smoothie to help yourself. Best of all, take your meals - including breakfast - outside, one of very few London hotels where you can do that.

There has to be a downside so I'll mention three things: 1) The location's slightly strange. No other hotel within half a mile and no proper shops or attractions in the immediate surroundings, just anonymous government offices. You won't get much of a view unless you fork out for the penthouse suite. Buses 507, 88 and C10 stop within a couple of minutes' walk but the closest tube stations are Westminster and Pimlico, each probably ten minutes away (but get an Oyster card and hop and off buses at any time, much more pleasant than using the tube and they arrive every five or ten minutes) 2) The staff tend to get overwhelmed when more than half a dozen people want to have breakfast at the same time or to check in/out 3) Services like the phone, minibar and laundry cost twice what they should, even compared with other hotels. And those cocktails are very expensive, though worth it.

The name 'City Inn' sounds to me like a three-star hotel and indeed it charges the same as many London three-stars. But for quality it matches most of the five-stars. There are far more exclusive hotels in this city. But they usually don't deliver better food, decor, comfort or service. For the price, you won't do better in London than the City Inn.

We stayed at the City Inn during half-term and we were very pleased with the hotel. If you are looking for modern and minimal lines this is for you. But the cool and sophistocated entrance hides a real warm reception from the staff. They couldn't do enough for us, even down to recommending which DVDs to borrow!
The rooms are modern and although not huge, have everything you'll need. We didnt eat in the restaurant except for breakfast but did order 2 meals via room service. The menu for room service isnt that extensive but it was wholesome and sufficient. When we went down for our first breakfast on Sunday morning the queues were horrendous but the staff dealt with the situation very efficiently and hurriedly set up extra tables. It did mean we had to eat at a low coffee table, so it wasnt that comfortable, but it was better than having to wait too long. We went down to breakfast earlier on Bank holiday Monday to avoid the rush!
The location is great as it's about a 5-10 minute walk to Pimlico Station and is also near the Tate, Westminster Bridge and the South Bank of the river if you want to explore that area. We had tickets to see a show at the Appollo Victoria and it was one stop on the underground.
I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay again.

My partner and I stayed in the hotel over the last Bank Holiday in May. On arrival the check in was fast and easy to use, when I enquired about where I could pay my congestion charge fee this was arranged by the concierge! All very easy so far.....
My room was clean, light, no view but then as I have said on other posts I don't come to major cities to look out of my hotel window. If there is a view it’s a bonus as far as I am concerned. The bathroom was uncomfortably small, but the shower hot and with adjustable pressure. Perfect after a long drive.
The restaurant was acceptable, nothing special and to be honest fairly reasonably priced in an already overpriced city.
My only complaint if you can call it that was the 'Garage' below. It is the foundation of the building and therefore has many, many support pillars that are worryingly close together which makes parking manoeuvres and leaving the garage a sweat breaking experience. The NCP car park nearby or even the street is more highly recommended!
All in all a nice stay, and 3 stars is not overrating the place at all

After much debate booked this hotel based on the reviews of this site and was sooooo pleased :)

Booked via hotels own website couple of days before we went and got a great deal, was offered club city room and breakfast for £109 per room per night or a suite for £175 per night, decided as it was a treat to book the suite.

Entrance to hotel spotlessly clean, well staffed.

Suite (as is all suites) was on the 12th floor, dining area, settee, bedroom with massive king size bed and large bathroom with powershower and bathtub.

Booking the suite entitles all to VIP service and boy were we spoilt. Quick checkin, escort to room, room service (change of towels etc) twice a day and personal link on the telephone to answer all enquiries.

Room was spotless, very clean , bright and bed comfortable. 2 LCD screens, cd player, etc. free newpaper per day, bowl of fruit, bottle of water and full english breakfast included in the price.

fantast floor to ceiling windows and brilliant view from room.

Room service was great and quick to respond.

I have stayed in many hotels and never have i come across so efficient , friendly staff. They certainly made an enjoyable stay.

The food was a bit expensive and ltd choice in the restaurant, however didnt think the drinks both in the restaurant or in the hotels additional lounge were to dear based on london prices.

Only downside was the full (free) english breakfast, had to queue a bit to get seated, meal wasnt too hot and goodness knows what the sausages were made of ! but otherwise a fantastic stay.

10 minute walk to nearest tube, pimlico station, then easy access to anywhere in london, we went to the 02 and with the walk to the station it took us just dead on 40 mins.

getting the tube to oxford street for the shopping and theatre, took us 25 mins

Bus stop couple of minutes, right by the tate gallery :)

quiet area, 5 mins to see thames , not far from the london eye.

cant recommend this hotel more :) go and i hope you have as good as time as us!

My wife and I had stayed at the City Inn before and so it was an easy decision to stay there again. We like the location and strolling along the Thames up to Parliament House and around this area. Arriving from Australia is usually early morning and so we arrived at the hotel at 9.00 am but fortunately it was a Sunday morning and as the City Inn is a business hotel first we had no difficulty getting an early check in. It is lovely and quiet in this area on a Sunday and so it good to catch up on a bit of rest.

We are smokers but we only stay in smoking rooms if the windows open which they do here. We stayed for four nights and enjoyed it again. It suits us right down to the ground as it is spotlessly clean quiet and centrally located. A cab to Victoria Station is only GBP6. Breakfast was included and this was the only meal we had there.

The TV is small but they have a range of free DVDs to watch which is a nice touch. There is no bath in the standard rooms.

The staff were friendly and competent and we will be back again.
