This was the perfect home base for our too-quick spring break week in London! After William and Kate announced that their Royal Wedding date would be just a few days after our planned visit, we started worrying about finding decent and affordable lodgings in London. Griffin House was able to fit us in for five of the seven nights of our trip, which was perfect. We arrived early and exhausted on a Saturday morning, and got to Griffin House before 9:00am, but it was no problem -- we were able to check in, shower, and relax immediately! After reading all the other reviews, our only disappointment was that Ben and Nic turned out to have just left for a trip, so we didn't get to experience their raved-about personalities until the morning we checked out...so glad we did get to meet them! In the meantime, their friend Retu was our host, and in the blink of an eye he carried our heavy bags up to the third floor. And, of course, Barney was there, with his wagging tail and sweet face.
We were in the Upper Apartment, which had two bedrooms -- we chose the one that looked out over the pretty garden and rooftops, versus the street. (The first night we were there, however, a loud party in the backyard of the house next door with throbbing music had us switching bedrooms in the middle of the night, trying to escape the noise! It was just as bad on the street side -- I think this was an unusual event, though.) The beds were comfortable with down pillows and comforter, and the whole apartment felt light and airy. Carpets were a little funky, but it was fine.
The kitchen was wonderful to have -- and it seemed like every day when we saw Retu, he gave us eggs from the chickens, so we were well supplied. There's also a wonderful tiny bakery just a few blocks up the street, and markets up on Clapham High Street or up Stockwell Road in Brixton. We would go out sightseeing for the day, then come back and make dinner and crash for the night...a nice set-up, and it felt like we were saving a lot by not eating in restaurants too much. Retu also let us do our laundry after a few days, which was fantastic, because the weather was unusually warm that week, and we hadn't brought enough lightweight clothes!
It was easy to get into town on the Tube, and nice to stay in a neighborhood that was not at all touristy, but still felt very vibrant (maybe a bit too vibrant the night of the party! ;)
Overall, we were very happy with our stay, and loved the spacious, comfortable feeling of the apartment and the whole of Griffin House. Can't wait to visit again!
