Having seen the video about Le Gavroche on their website I still wanted to go. I appreciate that the decor may not have been everyones cup of tea but it gave the feel of a members club. I liked the atmosphere as we were seated so we could see what was going on in the restaurant but we still had plenty of our own private space.
Due to severe traffic congestion en route I called ahead to say we would be late and was told by reception staff that we need not worry and they would see us whenever we arrived. We were half an hour late but were never rushed to "catch up" with any scheduling.
The menu was fairly short but there was enough for me and my partner to choose different dishes for each course.
All staff were very courteous, efficient, pleasant and not oppressive or pushy.
The large size of each dish portion was astounding as we expected much less on our plate, but that didn't put us off.
All three courses were beautifully prepared and well presented.
My partner's lobster and truffle salad was magnificent and as good as it gets. I had scallops and clams. I regard myself as a bit of an afficianado on scallops as they are my favourite dish and they were just perfect.
I am not sure what a previous poster meant when they said they were not happy with the way their veal was dished up as I was perfectly happy with mine, but we all have our opinions and expectations and I appreciate their comments reflected theirs. The veal was tasty and tender and the mash was fine (I don't usually like mash and am not a great fan of potatoes).
My partner's rabbit was superb and even more tender than my veal - melted in the mouth.
My partner's bitter chocolate dessert had a lovely crispy meringue base that was as thin as rice paper yet still crispy - fabulous.
I had the L'assiette dessert and each separate dish was individually excellent. One of my all time favourites - creme brulee was top notch. The other six desserts were all wonderfully prepared but the rum baba deserves a special mention for the amount of rum in it, enough to know it's there but not so much as to destroy the dish.
Expensive yes, but the portions were enormous.
Would I go again if given the opportunity? Yes, without doubt.
