We had eaten well at Artigiano before (a couple of years ago) and so saw it as a good bet for an important Mother’s Day meal but some of the food, and all of the service left us very disappointed.
The first indication that all was not well came when we tried to order, the restaurant was running a fixed-price menu with 6 choices for each course but a vegetarian member of our party did not fancy the single vegetarian main course option (a rich risotto). All that she did was ask to substitute in one of the starter dishes (still at starter size) as a main course (thus, in fact, making the restaurant more profit) but we were told that this could not be done using the old chestnut excuse of upsetting the chef. We were not asking to vary the contents of the dish, simply to have an item served probably 20 minutes later than it would normally be (in a restaurant that was not full) but this was (allegedly) too much for the kitchen! I have been trying to remember the last time that a restaurant refused to do something like this for us but I find that I simply cannot think of any other occasion – even in the most basic of restaurants.
We persevered with our meal, some dishes were actually quite nice, others not very good and most of them not very large, service was also very slow – with a 50 minute wait between starters and mains. Our vegetarian’s no-choice main course proved to be as unpalatable as she had expected and was mostly left on the plate but when it was collected we were, again, offered an explanation but not an apology.
This inconsiderate attitude to the customer continued at dessert when another of our party found a significant-sized piece of eggshell in her dessert, the dish was removed but no apology was offered.
At the end of our meal the apparent manageress who took our payment asked whether everything had been all right with our meal (don’t they talk to each other?) When we detailed the problems she still offered no apology, only a potential discount on a future booking (which we do not intend to make). Artigiano applies a ‘discretionary’ 12.5% service charge but when, in view of our experience and the lack of remorse shown, we significantly reduced the tip we were accompanied to collect our coats by the same ‘manageress’ making derogatory comments about us in Italian to her colleagues (which, unfortunately for her, we did understand). Needless to say we will not return to Artigiano and I would not recommend that Tripadvisor readers visit this restaurant.
