“Hidden Gem just off Wardour Street looks cheap but food tastes good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

We were taken here by my brother in law who knows London well. The cafe itself looks pretty cheap and a bit tatty, but it was very clean (loos included) service fast, food very good.

The veggie choice I had was not the best, (Nasi Goreng, as it was very dry) but my hubby and bro in law adored their noodle soup meals and said the taste was really good.

Great for a cheap (for London) meal, beware the portion sizes are BIG!!

“We always eat here every time we visit London”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

It was one of the first Malaysian restaurants I discovered around Chinatown before the others opened. Some of the dishes are pretty authentic and definitely yummy if one is missing Malaysian food. Their Nasi Lemak is the best I've eaten in London whilst some others are just so-so.
Prices are of usual London standards, but of course any Malaysian will tell you that it's 10times cheaper in Malaysia.
Cleanlinest is okay. Most staff are friendly except for 1 who makes you feel as if you're troubling her.

“Best spot for spore/malaysian food in chinatown”

Been here several times- authentic teh tarik and ice kacang. Favourite dishes would be fried kway teoh, hokkein mee. Laska was not spicy enough, although broth was tasty, abit salty. Chicken wings was 6 small winglets, lacked seasoning. Kangkong belacan was spot on, with the smell and taste of belacan and dried shrimps bringing back the taste of spore/malaysian flavours back. Carrot cake was more malaysian style, chunky pieces with lots of bean sprouts

“Solid Malaysian Restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

We chose C&R after wandering up and down Westbourne Grove for several blocks. We don't have extensive experience with Malaysian cuisine, having eaten it in Boston a couple of times, and then coincidentally in Philadelphia at a sister restaurant to the Boston location. That said, C&R was very tasty, although perhaps we should order more adventurously in the future. The mee goreng was an interesting blend of noodles, shrimp, and "fish cakes," which were chewy in a slightly squid-like way. We also had a special of fried fish served in a chili sauce (which was a lot easier to eat than the crab in chili sauce we ordered in the previous Malaysian place, although not as memorable.) We enjoyed the meal, although if we return to Bayswater, I doubt we'll be drawn back.

“Poor service and hygiene (cockroach, hair in food), food not as good as before”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2009

I have been a long term customer going back at least 5 years, eating at this place every 1-2 years whenever I'm visiting London.
This time round, the service was substandard. I ordered roti canai as a starter and laksa for the main course. The waiter brought me iced milk tea which I didn't order (I asked for iced water), when I said so, he took it away promptly, and rather than offer to give it for free, it was poured down the sink.
Then my main course arrived before my starter, and when I commented on that, the waiter said "oh, it will come", which was hardly my point.
While I was eating, I spotted a small cockroach crawl out from a joint in the bar counter where I was sitting next to. When I told the waiter, he chased after it with a napkin, but did not offer to move me to another table. I ate my laksa with my eyes fixated on the bar counter in case other cockroaches appeared.
Anyway, I finished my laksa before the roti canai arrived. The roti was over-cooked, oily and quite hard, and what's worse, I found a hair embedded in the roti. Needless to say I declined another portion in exchange.
When I thought nothing else could go wrong, I was told I could not pay the bill (which was now £6.50 without the roti canai) with a card if it is less than £10. There was a sign on the door that says they accept cards, but no mention that the bill needs to be more than £10! I paid in cash after a visit to the cash machine. Then I was short-changed, given £1 less.
Come on, they need to employ proper waiters, not students who have no intelligence and cannot do simple maths. The food has gone downhill, so while it may be cheap for London standards, I don't think it is worthwhile putting up with the poor service and poor hygiene.
Needless to say, I won't be coming back.
