“Unpleasant surprises”

We loved Norwich. We didn't think the city would be so great. The Maids Head was not as pleasant a surprise. It is a great location and a great building. It is trying to be something great. But it is pretty ill-managed. We did not realize we were in the bar district with no air-conditioning and needed to have the window open -- surprisingly noisy. Our room was in the stuffy, redone old part of the building (and I mean old!). Parts were still undone. They did bring a fan about two hours after we asked. What's more, for some reason it was hard to call them from the US and I didn't get to confirm my Expedia booking -- I should have. They had assigned our room to someone else, said I didn't pay for breakfast (the second day, they gave it the first). Upon check out, it was as if I hadn't been there for two days, since the staff changed. We were glad to leave it behind.

“Pefectly Fine Stay at Maids Head”

Maids Head Hotel

21 Jul 2008

Recently stayed at the Maids Head for a one night stay during my sisters graduation at UEA. As the stay with my family was a short one, and a celebratory one, all we required was clean and comfortable accomadtion in a good location. And that is what we got.

The hotel itself is a little rundown and slightly oldfashioned and dissapointing in areas, but if you're not expecting much, it's noting to worry about and really won't affect your stay. Just beware that this hotel isn't a palace and nothing luxurious. Just a standard, decent hotel.

We ordered 3 standard double rooms from 'laterooms.com' and arrived at check in to recieve one upgrade into a suite. Excellent! The suite, although not one of the recently rennovated rooms, had a massive lounge room and adjoining bedroom/ bathroom. Nothing to complain about! The other rooms were modernly furnished, comfortable and more than adequate for a short stay. The beds were really comfortable and was impressed with the soft sheets and bedding. Bathrooms were clean with a powerful shower on the top floor (always a good thing!) I wasn't expecting a lot and was pleasantly suprised to see a well run hotel. Nothing exceptional by any means but fine overall. Breakfast was well done with quite a few options- a hot, cooked selection, cereals, fruits and pasteries. I can assure you that overeating is possible!

The free car park was great - but remember to get the barrier code from reception before attempting to leave, or else you will have to call or walk back to reception to get it. As we didn't think to do this! We had reservations at Old Orleans restaurant and the drive was a short one from the hotel. Could have walked it, but tired after 4 hour journey plus 4 girls with a pair of heels on!

I'd recommend this hotel for anyone who requires an average hotel for a short stay in a fairly central location. Also managed to get rooms for £75 each, breakfast included, so haggle if you feel you can. We found this rate on laterooms. com and when called to book were told rates were £90! Not impressed. A little persuasion and we got the rates we found. So always worth a try.

Good luck travellers.

Stayed here with a bunch of mates for a night. Good location - just off the top end of the high street in the middle of town - so only a quick crawl home at 2:00am.....

Room was large, very warm, and the bathroom, although very small was well equipped and didn't feel old or worn.

My room was right above the entrance overlooking the mini roundabout, and the noise from passing traffic first thing in the morning didn't help with sleep (especially when it was needed through alcohol abuse!) Plus, maybe it was industrial bin collection day (I stayed on a Thursday night) but it was non-stop beeping of reversing lorries and clunking of metal from very early on....

We didn't eat, but ordered a few drinks before going out. Service was quite slow....

The staff on reception though were very nice, Complimentary newspaper in the morning is always a nice touch, and car parking was free for resident (very good considering the location).

Room price was not bad. Bed was comfortable enough and well sized. TV was the main terrestrial channels and a couple of freeview ones.

There's not a great deal of choice in the centre of the town though; would I stay there again. Possibly....

“A pleasant week!”

Very clean, appears to have been recently renovated. (In fact one area might still be undergoing renovation.) Helpful, friendly staff. If you're a walker it's within walking distance of most areas of interest to tourists. Very quiet also, no issues with noise or distractions at all. We appreciated the high-intensity reading lights on the bed, and the in-room tea making facility. A bit of an administrative difficulty over the fact that we had prepaid the room and the hotel didn't seem to have a record of that, but that could be the travel agency's fault, not the hotel's. In any case it was worked out efficiently and pleasantly. We didn't eat there due to the menu prices, so can't comment on the food. If we return to Norwich (and we hope to) we'll definitely consider the Maid's Head.
