We stayed just one noght there at what was a really special hotel, in an extraordinary location - in the heart of the city just a step from Elm Hill, Tombland and the cathedral, Market Place etc. but at the same time peaceful - no traffic noise, just bird song. By Appointment is a restaurant with rooms, decorated in a theatrical style wih many junk shop and antique finds. The decor is quirky in these days of hotel minimalism, but stylish in its way. We would recommend eating there: the food is good (expert amateur in style) and the intimate dining rooms make it feel special. What makes this place so memorable is the warmth of the welcome and the personal touches. We will always try to stay there when we go to Norwich, and I would commend it to you as well.

NB The stairs to some of the rooms are steep and there are low beams - some of the buildings are 16th century or earlier, so be warned!

we stayed here for 2 nights - our wedding night and the night after that - and had an amazing stay, i just wish we'd spent more time in the rooms!
Wonderfully charming and unique, we had the roof/loft room which comes with your own personal staircase, bathroom and landing. the bath is a zillion feet long and free-standing and everything about it is like a step back in time. very romantic and cosy, with a roof top view of norwich. cluttered with antiques and memorabilia, so if you're claustrophobic might be a bit much, but we loved it. breakfast was divine, and served in a private room off the landing - with stravinsky on our own private speakers!
both nights we got back to find either a chocolate on the pillows with a hand written note from the owners or a cognac each. the ONLY gripe was an officious cleaner who insisted we leave our room so she could clean it at about 10am. it was the day after our wedding!! sure she's left now.... a real treat, and can't WAIT to stay there again.

Our stay at By Appointment was really unexpected and not planned, but after a long day at the beach we jsut did not feel like driving back to Cambridge. Luckily this place still had the upstairs room available that night and after some negotiation about the price we made a good deal for that night. The hosts of the place are lovely people which really tried all there best to make us feel at home even though it was a late arrival. The champagne was nice and we really enjoyed the breakfast with fresh fruits, yogurt and warm croissants. It was an unexpected nice stay at an unusual place. I recommend it for those who like unusual, cosy places and good food.

My wife and I stayed at By Appointment for our wedding anniversary booking the (recently added) executive room

This place is a little unusual, almost bizarre. A strange mixture of old fashioned architectural styles, furnishing and artworks. Perhaps not quite as stylish as the proprietors believe, but for some reason it works to create an interesting atmosphere. We did enjoy it. The executive room was large and luxurious as was the ensuite bathroom which had a great bath and shower. There is a fireplace which apparently can be used in winter. The only improvement we could suggest is larger television than the small portable that was in place - call us phillistines but we felt that a plasma screen would add to the culture. The location of By Appointment is good too, in a secluded area of Norwich but within easy walking distance of the shops and good restaurants. There is some parking too.

The service is of note too. The proprietors go out of their way to welcome their guests. We had glasses of ice cold champagne delivered to our room as an anniversary surprise - a very nice touch. More generally they were always eager to check we were enjoying our stay and to give friendly advice. We didn't have dinner in the restaurant, but breakfast was excellent with homemade croissants and tasty scrambled egg with salmon or bacon.

We really enjoyed our stay and although it was expensive, with the atmosphere and the excellent service I believe it was good value. I would recommend By Appointment for a romantic treat - no partner could fail to be impressed by a surprise weekend at this location.
