“Great weekend”

Premier Inn Norwich - City Centre

8 Feb 2008

My partner and I went to Norwich for a weekend break. We booked this hotel online a few days before.

Arriving Friday evening we parked in a public car park that is conveniently next door to the hotel (no on site parking). It was very clean and is given in the directions to the hotel on the website.

Arriving with our luggage the young Polish receptionist was very helpful and pleasant. This makes a big difference.

OK, so it’s a chain hotel, but of course they do vary in standard. I’ve stayed in many of these hotels, for business and pleasure and the standard here was much higher than in hotels of the other chains.

I have to say that this one seems new, and it shows. The room and the corridors had that fresh new smell of carpets and furniture (I like it anyway). The room was very well appointed, and again several steps up from other chain hotels. The receptionist said that we had been given a quiet room, and wow, it was very quiet!

The restaurant and bar are cosy. We only ate breakfast. The full English breakfast was good value I thought, with as much as you can eat for £7 per person. The food was good and the surroundings very pleasant.

The staff were very helpful, and I felt that they wanted to go that little extra bit – we even had our luggage carried out to the car.

The hotel is very convenient as it’s in the city, and is perhaps 10 minutes walk (slightly uphill I must say) from the town centre.

On getting back to the car park to go home I was very pleasantly surprised that it only cost £10 from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon! (we didn't use the car the whole weekend). This was a nice finishing touch. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay.

My last review here was of a less than satisfactory experience. I don’t just want to report negative experiences and I’m pleased that this is the opposite!

“Great hotel, great location - pleasently surprised”

Premier Inn Norwich - City Centre

12 Jan 2008

I stayed here for one night. I had an early train to catch to london and this hotel is ideally situatied for the train station.

The room was pleasent with all the usual ammenities. The bed was comfortable and despite being on the ground floor noise was not a problem.

The breakfast was good value and tasty.

Would stay here again when visiting Norwich

Given that there seems to be a dearth of decent hotels in Norwich, this wasn’t bad. The room was fine on the whole, especially for the price (a very reasonable £61 per night). Good sized room, bed was very wide and comfortable, though not long enough really to accommodate partner’s 6’2’’ height. Minor complaints: duvet instead of sheets and blankets (I wonder if this trend is to reduce labour costs in actually making the bed). No wardrobe or drawers, just an enclosed clothes rail and some open shelves. Also: window wouldn’t open more than an inch. It was very hot that weekend and fortunately the room had a very efficient (if noisy) air-conditioning machine. Flat screen TV was fine.

The public car park was a bit of a pain as we arrived on Friday afternoon when it was probably at its most full, but £5 for 24 hours seemed very reasonable.

Having seen other reviews, I asked for a room not on the ground floor and away from the noisy security doors. This was taken on board (they have obviously read the tripadvisor reviews)and we were put on the 4th floor about as far from the security doors as possible, so I was impressed by this. We were a bit taken aback by the over-the -top security arrangements at the hotel – we had to use our keycard three times actually to get up to the room, leading us to worry that we were staying in a very dangerous area indeed! The lifts were very slow and creaky.

The person who checked us in seemed to be reading from a script from his computer screen, which was a bit weird. They charged my card for the room when we checked in, an experience I haven’t had since we stayed in a couple of hotels in Liverpool, where they clearly expected you to run away without paying given half a chance. We also had to pay on the spot for breakfast! Have never come across this before. (except, as before, in Liverpool, where you had to pay for a compulsory breakfast token and could get a refund if you didn’t use it). Having said all this, there was the advantage that we didn’t have to queue up to check out when leaving; just handed in our key cards.

The cooked breakfast wasn’t that nice. Continental was OK, with fruit salad, croissants etc. The restaurant was a bit cramped.. Various families with children were well treated, which I thought was nice.

Wifi cost £5 for an hour, £12 for 24 hours and £24 for a week.

Read an article in the Guardian recently which compared Norwich favourably with Bath and York – well I don’t think so, though the cathedral is impressive and the area around it is attractive. We went to Sandringham which was quite interesting though the grounds aren’t all that…. It was rather sad (but perhaps not surprising) that Prince John, epileptic boy who died aged 13 in 1919 (whose story was told by Stephen Poliakoff in “The Lost Prince”) had been wiped out of the history of the place, although he lived there with his nanny in a house nearby and is buried in the churchyard.

I wouldn’t necessarily choose to go back to Norwich again but, if I did, I would be quite happy to stay here.

This hotel is in the best location to visit the Norfolk Broads, Great yarmouth as well as Norwich city itself. we booked a family room for myself, my partner and two teenagers. We were pleasantly surprised at the size of the room. It was the largest family room we have ever stayed in and came with a balcony and view of the river. absolutely beautiful. the decor was modern, clean and well maintained. The staff were ALL polite friendly and helpful. We tried the adjoining restaurant( The Nelson) and again we were pleased with what was on offer. Beautiful food at affordable prices, served by friendly polite staff. there is no need to travel far if you fancy something else when dining, as there is an abundance of different eateries in the vicinty however i would highly recommned The Nelson. The breakfast was good and they even give children staying a free breakfast for each paying adult, which is a bonus. Another bonus is the free parking for hotel guests which for an inner city hotel is unusual to find nowadays. This hotel makes the perfect base for a trip to Norfolk.
