My husband booked this hotel for us as a surprise. I love Norfolk especially the bars and shopping in the City centre. St Giles had recently been seen on the TV 'Hell to Hotel' we arrived having no idea about what we would find. It is very different - the location is fantastic - but ..... the hotel is already looking a bit tired. The building itself is outstanding, and it is a shame that the furniture, which has obviously been carefully selected - has been in some areas ruined. I was really surprised that when I ordered a coffee that the waiter just put it down on the table, my cup therefore added to the other white ring marks on a very expensive table!
Our room - Revolution - was different! The bathroom was large and well designed. The main bedroom was ok. We had paid extra for a balcony that overlooked a back yard! This was something like you would see on Coronation Street!
The staff were very friendly and helpful - but the prices for drinks and breakfast was over the top. I would suggest missing the breakfast at 16.99 each. Walk down the road to Jarrolds - you get something much better for 3.95! plus all the coffee you can drink.
It is an experience - it is like going back in time to the 1930's. Would I go there again - I would hope that in time it will become better. It does deserve to as it is a really lovely place. Just not sure if management have got it right yet.
We made a complaint to the manager when leaving. We were angry to find that our smoke alarm in our room had been covered in plastic. Personally we think they had not taken the plastic off after painting the room - the reception staff say it happens because customers want to smoke in the rooms? Questionable when the smoke alarm was 7ft up - and the customer could have simply gone out on the balcony! Another surprise was the 5.00 per night parking fee. They don't mention that when you arrive!
St Giles is unique. It has class. It just needs someone to realise it's beauty. When that happens it will be the place to go. I guess it is just a matter of wait and see!
