“Different!”

St Giles House Hotel

My husband booked this hotel for us as a surprise. I love Norfolk especially the bars and shopping in the City centre. St Giles had recently been seen on the TV 'Hell to Hotel' we arrived having no idea about what we would find. It is very different - the location is fantastic - but ..... the hotel is already looking a bit tired. The building itself is outstanding, and it is a shame that the furniture, which has obviously been carefully selected - has been in some areas ruined. I was really surprised that when I ordered a coffee that the waiter just put it down on the table, my cup therefore added to the other white ring marks on a very expensive table!

Our room - Revolution - was different! The bathroom was large and well designed. The main bedroom was ok. We had paid extra for a balcony that overlooked a back yard! This was something like you would see on Coronation Street!

The staff were very friendly and helpful - but the prices for drinks and breakfast was over the top. I would suggest missing the breakfast at 16.99 each. Walk down the road to Jarrolds - you get something much better for 3.95! plus all the coffee you can drink.

It is an experience - it is like going back in time to the 1930's. Would I go there again - I would hope that in time it will become better. It does deserve to as it is a really lovely place. Just not sure if management have got it right yet.

We made a complaint to the manager when leaving. We were angry to find that our smoke alarm in our room had been covered in plastic. Personally we think they had not taken the plastic off after painting the room - the reception staff say it happens because customers want to smoke in the rooms? Questionable when the smoke alarm was 7ft up - and the customer could have simply gone out on the balcony! Another surprise was the 5.00 per night parking fee. They don't mention that when you arrive!

St Giles is unique. It has class. It just needs someone to realise it's beauty. When that happens it will be the place to go. I guess it is just a matter of wait and see!

Have just returned from a 2 night stay at St Giles after booking a special rate of £70 per night for a king room on Laterooms.com. The room we got (19) was located on the gound floor in the old part of the building which got a little noisy due to the street level location I also witnessed some sort of dodgy deals going on outside the YMCA! but hey no one bothered us! . The room itself was nice, the bed and pillows good, it was pretty hot though - but we did visit on one of the only sunny weekends of the year! A fan was provided. Tea and Coffee is provided in the room and you request fresh milk - much better than those horrid long life things. The bathroom was above average, room 19 has a separate claw foot bath and a shower cubicle with a huge head, complimentary products from The White Company were a nice touch.
All the staff we came across were friendly and polite and always checked if we needed anything,
We had cocktails on the terrace which was pleasean - they are not cheap but are very very good and made to perfection so worth the extra pound or so. The treatments in the Elysium spa are good but again not cheap - I had a facial and back massage with Saphire who was pretty skilled, my partner who is a qualfied sports massage therepist also thought his massage was above average.
OK here's the downside, and in my mind the only negative...the breakfast totally sucks, Eggs benedict came as one poached egg on a dry muffin minus the bacon/ham not sure the hollandaise was up to much either! Admittedly the cost of the breakfast was taken off this bill but because of the terrible breakfast we decided not to bother with dinner in the restaurant event though I thought the menu sounded quite exciting. We went to the Loch Fyne fish restaurant opposite which I would highly reccomend a a reasonably priced dinner.
All in all this is a good hotel in a great location for exploring Norwich, I will return.

I stayed at St Giles House for 2 nights and found the whole stay fantastic. The room and bathroom were one of the best I have stayed in. The bed was divine, room large, and the bathroom out of this world. Granted I managed to get a reduction on the official price which made the stay even more palatable but the quality of decor and friendliness of service really promted me to write a review to balance the others written about this hotel. If you can justify the price, or manage to negotiate a discount, then this hotel is definately recommended.

“Opulent and friendly”

St Giles House Hotel

We managed to get the Mariantoinette suite for £150 per night for 3 nights (room only). We were attending a family wedding and the bride and groom were also staying.

Right from the time of booking the staff were friendly and attentive.

We were worried that the hotel would be a bit snooty and too over the top in a 'not proper posh' type of way. (You know, sort of footballers wives). It wasn't, it was lovely!! The staff were attentive but the place still felt nice and relaxed. The original decor was beautifully put together and made the whole expereince really interesting.

We didn't eat in the restaurant but we did have room service. Breakfast was £16.95 for a full English and we paid an extra £5 tray charge to have it in our room. The breakfast was tasty, hot, and a good size. (I would suggest that if you want a bigger /cheaper breakfast you should try a nearby cafe). We also had some sandwiches one afternoon which were lovely and, impressively were made with home made bread. Room service was efficent, friendly and quick.

The room was huge and lovely with an enourmous bed. I especially loved the giant free standing bath. We had plenty of lovely big fluffy towels and bath robes.

The whole hotel was spotless. There is no view from the room but we were in the middle of a city and hadn't come to gaze out of a window. The main street can get a bit noisy after pub closing but again, the hotel is right in the middle of a city and we expected this.

The cocktail bar was great with a large selection of cocktails. We found that drinks did not cost any more than we would pay in a normal bar in Brighton.

The hotel is expensive maybe for Norwich but for the rest of the country, particularly the South Coast and London it is a possitive bargain. We did spend allot of money but came away feeling as if it had been very well spent.

Well done, I hope the hotel continues to do well under the new owners as I would love to stay there again (I have my eye on the luxury suite next time and would love to visit the spa)!!!!

“Struggling to make it work”

St Giles House Hotel

We spent one night in what is billed as the best room in this hotel. Getting a late deal for £150 instead of the quoted rate of £350. This included breakfast – which at £18 per head is expensive for what you get. At the rate we paid this is an interesting place to stay, but I certainly couldn’t recommend it at the full rate.

Our suite was at the top of the hotel – requiring you to negotiate about 4 steps once you get out of the lift. You enter via a very long corridor contained within the suite itself. The furnishings and fittings were interesting, the bed was large and comfortable. Separate bathing room, and a decent shower room are all provided. There is the usual TV and DVD in the lounge. With a further (freeview) TV only in the bedroom.

The location whilst being excellent for proximity to Norwich town centre – suffers from being in a noisy street – both cars and the local YMCA which can get a bit rowdy. The outlook for a number of the rooms is less than salubrious. The food is only average – at around £28 per head fixed price menu mid week. The presentation was reasonable with friendly service, but elements were distinctly luke warm.

The hotel has received a lot of publicity having been the subject of a TV series currently showing in Australia. The owners certainly had a grand vision to create an upmarket boutique hotel. The time and large amount of money spent is evident – but it doesn’t quite come off. No fridge in the top of the range suite? A kettle which has to be placed on the floor to reach the socket? Hair in the plug hole in the shower? All small matters but to operate in the position they have set themselves have to be got right. The hotel has recently gone into liquidation, but remains open for business, with the original owners and staff remaining. Judged on the midweek night we spent, business is less than busy – there were only 3 other guests dining that evening. The hotel therefore lacks any atmosphere. Not helped in my opinion by playing one Madeleine Peyroux CD on suffle all evening – and then again at breakfast! All this is rather a shame – it’s a good concept, but probably in the wrong place. OK if you get a good deal and don’t expect to get the experience that their website promises.
