We have just got back from one nights stay here. I admit ,on first arriving it looks like a lick of paint wouldn't go amiss, and probably if we hadn't already booked we would have looked elsewhere. Once inside though the staff couldn't be more helpful. Our four-poster room was huge. The canopy, quilt cover and curtains didn't really match the wallpaper and carpet but I think that may be me being picky. A big bathroom with toiletries, fluffy towels, big bath and lots of hot water. Plenty of storage space, settee and a couple of chairs, tea and coffee.
We walked to the Mallyan Spout 80 ft waterfall. (Go down the side of the Mallyan Spout Hotel). It's well worth a visit. There is a footpath down (and down and down!!) and some rocks to clamber over at the bottom but well worth the effort. I did it in flipflops so it's not that bad.
The huge breakfast next morning really set us up for the day. Hubby had kippers and said they were delicious.
In 36 hours I feel like I have had a weeks holiday. It is such a peaceful area and lots of places to go to. We will stay there again and explore more. It is only 15mins to Whitby and would be an ideal base.
Sheep are everywhere, asleep in the middle of the road, and anywhere else they fancy, but it all adds to the charm.
Goathland is not a big village but on the theraputic / relaxation scale it is enormous.
We thoroughly recommend this hotel for good food, comfortable room and excellent friendly service.

We broke down just outside Goathland in a thunderstorm in the middle of January & just managed to limp in our vehicle to the Inn on the Moor which we thought might be closed at that time of the year. Mr & Mrs Simpson couldn't have been more hospitable. We couldn't fault the first class dinner or breakfast. Yes, the place is a bit of a 'warren' (see other reviews) but I thought it was a pleasure to have a beer (good selection) & a gossip at the bar with some of the agreeable locals who were quickly introduced to us by Malcolm Simpson. It was a nice change for once NOT to have to put up with a load of posers at the bar. The bedroom was very clean; the bed linen was immaculate (one of my wife's 'big things' in hotels) & everything dusted. Mr Simpson is, honestly, the spitting image of the late comedian Eric Morecambe & just get him to relate some of his experiences about when he worked in London. All in all, no problems here & we will definitely be back when the weather is better. I am told the scenery is great around Goathland in September through to late October.

I have made several visits to the Inn on the Moor and look forward to staying there again in the future.
It is beautifully situated in the delightful village of Goathland, close to forests, moors and coast.
The hotel is roomy and well furbished with a wide choice of rooms, suites and cottages. It is warm and clean and the staff are friendly and simply cannot do enough to make your stay comfortable. At my last visit, I took a party of 60, but the large numbers caused no problems and the hospitality was outstanding.
The greatest strength of the Inn on the Moor (along side its excellent real ale!) is the quality of its food. The produce is mainly local and the cooking is superb. It is worth calling in for a bar meal if you are in the area - the lamb broth is magnificent!

“poor standard”

This is a late posting as we have only just discovered this excellent website. my wife and I stayed there last july '06 with our pet dog. we were given the downstairs room (32) nearest the kitchen, bins, and back door. On arrival, we were displeased that the room smelt strongly of cigarette smoke. The room had very poor decor and was dark and dingey. New rules on smoking now exist in the UK of course so that shouldn't be a problem now
Our first full English breakfast only contained one sausage on the plate together with the usual other items and it looked like a Tesco value one.During the day we saw a Tesco home delivery van pull up and 'value' bread and other sundries being delivered. Low and behold, next morning we were given two sausages on our plate for breakfast! (must have been low on stock then?) The waiting staff were Polish (cheap labour probably). we didn't bbother complaining at the time about the room or food because we had already formed the view that it probably wouldn't matter to anybody there anyway. The outside was in need of a repaint. we got locked out having arrived back from the pub opposite one night and had to phone a number and then wait outside10-15 minutes for someone to come and let us back in. We have been back to North Yorks twice since but haven't even considered staying at the inn on the moor. In fairness to the hotel, this posting is a year late and things may have improved at the hotel since we stayed there.

My first visit to the Inn was in 2002. I had been very impressed by the friendliness of the staff, the large, comfortable and clean rooms and more. There is no better place to find a relaxing atmosphere where your ever need is accomodated. Since 2002, the owners have undertaken new renovations which now include a front conservatory by the parking lot and a separate entrance for the locals visiting the pub - both to be completed soon. I have never known B&B owners to be more lovely and welcoming. Whether dining in the conservatory in the evenings or simply enjoying pub meals, I found the meals abundant, delicious and presented attractively with every effort to provide foods from the local farmers and fishermen. The wines and beer selections are excellent.. This is truly country living with #1 class in an area where an abundance of nearby sites to explore and hiking opportunities are just outside the doors. Anyone looking for a quiet and restful place to forget the stresses of the "outside world", a place where you're greeted as a friend, and every need promptly addressed cannot go wrong staying at the Inn on the Moor. Well done, Malcolm & Judy!!!! I WILL be back someday...
