I have stayed at hotels and b&b places in Whitby for many, many years and have to say that our one night at the Bramblewick was the worst I have ever experienced. We were supposed to stay for 2 nights but couldn't face a second night on the most uncomfortable beds EVER! My husband and I had a tiny double room on the third floor. It was very cramped with the double bed taking up most of the floor space. My mother had a single room next to ours.
I was awake most of the night trying to get comfortable on the rock hard bed. By 4am I was seriously considering sleeping on the floor, the only problem being that there wasn't enough floor space to lie down on. By 6am I was up to stay and by 6.30 my husband had also had enough. To pass the time until breakfast I attempted to have a shower, only to discover there was no hot water to be had from the shower head. I settled for a bath instead, but the water pressure was so feeble it took 30 minutes to run a shallow bath. (This was not a particular problem as I had nothing better to do anyway.)
It turned out that my 80 year old mother had encountered the same problem with the bed in her room and she was in quite considerable pain from her back.
Totally disgusted and tired we ate our breakfasts (which were excellent, by the way) and checked out, never to return. There are many far more comfortable b&b's in Whitby than this one and I cannot understand how this place gets such high praise from people.
I would never stay here again under any circumstances!
