On arrival at the George "hotel" we looked for the hotel entrance and unable to find it we walked into the bar. We were then checked in via the bar staff who were serving us and punters at the same time, then we paid up front for the room which is something I have not experienced since travelling in Europe when I was 17! We were handed the key fobs and pointed in the right direction. "can't be too bad maybe?" we thought . . . we were wrong!
On we went up, and up to our room through several flights of stairs, past the cot and poor fire doors mentioned earlier by the American reviewer, not always knowing if the way was clear as the lights kept going out owing to some of them being on a sensor.
Arriving into the room the heart sank even more! Faded decor, and shabbiness greeted us, then we were nearly knocked out by a strange smell. Also the carpet certainly needed vacuuming. On closer inspection it appeared as if there were some kind of insects attatched to the edges of the carpet. Picking several up they appeared to be dead. There appeared to be quite a few of these, I think they were some kind of bed bug or lice - but im no expert! This made for myself sleeping in my trousers and t shirt feeling quite uncomfortable.
The first night was fairly quiet with only the odd boy racer speeding around outside, however, on the second night it was a different experience . . .. Kareoke night downstairs until gone 1 am made for a noisy evening.
Breakfast was also only between 830-930 which was too late for the first day as the train we needed to catch for our day out left at 850! However we enjoyed a delicious cooked breakfast courtesy of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Grosmont Station. On the second day we needed sat nav to find the breakfast area in the "pub" region of the hotel. Breakfast was freshly cooked and the staff there were friendly.
Checkout . . . . . . where do we go ? who do we speak to?? ah yes! the cleaning lady, who after seeing us stood by the empty bar came to see what we wanted!
I would not recommend this bar with attatched sleeping quarters to anyone wanting a peaceful stay in Whitby.
