The George Hotel

29 Jan 2007

As soon as we stepped into The George hotel "lobby" the fun started. There didn't seem to be any distinction between pub and hotel, which caused a bit of confusion and much trapsing up and down of stairs with baggage in hope of finding the reception. So where were the concierge staff to greet and assist their new guests? Too busy avoiding the arrivals.
Finally we persuaded a member of the bar staff to help us with signing in.
The rooms were filled with the overpowering scent of air freshner and dusty arrangements of 'silk' flowers. Many of the bathroom fittings were not attached and fell off every day, only to be replaced again by the chamber-staff (repeat to fade).
If you'd prefer a restful night in Whitby, this is not the place for you.
And just how hard is it to provide your guests with real orange juice for breakfast? Orange-coloured water will not do.

We booked this hotel since the website looked nice and had a good sample menu for the restaurant. Be warned - the photographs do not tell the whole picture. The hotel has 2 sides, the other being a very load pub with a late license and if your room is on the lower floors you will have music pounding through the floor until 2am. You get a free drink when you check in (at the bar and had to pay in full - we should have known) but it comes in a plastic glass (and one of the drinks was wine). The room was stark with no character with a carpet of many years standing. The bathroom had an ill-fitting (broken?) toilet seat, no shampoo etc and no hairdryer. Breakfast was served in one of the bars and the floor was sticky in parts! The only good points to be said are that the room was clean, it had an en-suite with an ok shower and there was a separate residents entrance onto a nice street so we never had to go through the bar again.

Absolutly awfull. The Majority of staff were rude. The noise was so unbarible we had to leave the room at midnight just for some peace both nights that we stay there. Take my advise and stay somewhere else.

Stayed at The George Hotel November 2005 bed & breakfast. The staff could definately do with a crash course on customer service! The rooms were shabby, carpets dirty and the bed linen has seen better days. The shower didn't seem to have any control other than scolding hot.The breakfast was a rushed affair the tea was flat cold and the service appauling the waitress was surley and all she seemed to want was for us to go! I wouldn't recommend this place and wouldn't stay ther again.
