We stayed here for our wedding anniversary. Could not believe the location and its convenience for 'The Shambles' and other attractions, all within about 10 min’s walk. We were warmly greeted by the staff and was wished a happy anniversary for the following day. We were shown to our room by the house keeper who introduced herself and on entering the room was delighted to find hand written card wishing us congratulations on our anniversary from all the staff. The room was lovely and clean and tastefully decorated (not one shown on the web site) and we looked over a green and just to the left the Minister (Rm 51). Only problems I found was that on the Fri night (although asking for an upper floor after reading a previous review) it was a little noisy with a taxi rank outside, but certainly did not spoil our stay. We booked into the restaurant for a meal that evening but my husband (being a Yorkshire man himself) looked at the menu and found it a bit 'flouncy' (ie no steaks available!) so we cancelled and ended up in a small quaint wine bar down Grape Lane where we had the most delicious burger! far cry from the restaurant but it had brie in so I was more than happy. The following night we went to Nineteen (a restaurant next door) had an excellent meal there, need to book though (which I did).
My husband and I had a fantastic in time and it was lovely at breakfast to help yourself to cereals etc, but for an order to be taken for a cooked breakfast i.e eggs benedict, makes a change from eating rubbery food from a hot counter!

Staying one night in York for a brief break caused a dilemna for my partner and I, but only in terms of where to stay. Well, wonder no longer. We wouldn't go further than the Dene Court Hotel for any future visit. Literally, right next to the Minster and in such a central position that restaurants and shops were close to hand. The room (No 20) was nicely furnished with the biggest bed (one of those 'Super Kingsize' jobbies) I'd slept in. Honestly, it was like sleeping on my own, there was so much space! The en-suite was large, with a wall separating the wet room at one end (shower [including a seat and handrail for the disabled], toilet and washbasin) and the bath at the other end. The decor was nice but not terrific, going for the contemporary look but somehow not quite pulling it off. A moot point though. This hotel is great. I particularly loved the staff. They were so helpful. The valet parking (I object to paying for parking, but £8 we thought was cheap for the city) was a great service. They allowed us to remain parked with them the following day for no extra charge. Nothing was too much trouble for us. I felt truly welcome.
We dined at Ask (the Assembly Rooms). Nice meal but too big and little atmosphere. Next time we'd dine at the hotel because the ambience looked so good and we were impressed by the AA rosette awards. My recommendation is not to go for the cheaper small bedrooms - I took a peak in and I'd have been disappointed. You couldn't swing a cat. Our standard room was lovely and very spacious.

Great place, great location ,great bar,but terrible management. My wife and I are smokers who smoked outside of the hotel then put them out on the sidewalk(no ashtray or trash can available) we then place the butts in the trash can in our room.On our return home four days later we recieve a letter from the manager saying we smoked in the room in which we did not and that we would be charged 150 pounds ($309) My wife who had used amex for that nights stay responded to the manager via e-mail the very next day and told him that we had not smoked in the room and recieved a reply that said "it was abundantly clear to us that the room was very smokey on enetering" this is a complete lie unless one of there own people had smoked in it. Like I said this is a great place but if you smoke do not stay here I would also suggest you have the manager check the room before you leave to make sure everything is in order to avoid any outlandish charges. The hotel even held our bags for about two hours after we had checked out and said nothing of this on our return. If they knew of this why say nothing ?

We managed to secure a room for one night on Valentines night to celebrate our anniversary.
The hotel is opposite the minster and we had a room that looked out onto the magnificent building. The room was a decent size and was tastefully decorated.
The location is perfect, right in the centre of York. It was a little noisy through the night as we had the window open. It is opposite a Taxi rank.
The staff were very helpful and the car parking valet service was a nice touch.
We had a special menu meal for Valentines night which was very good. A perfectly paced meal with great presentation and flavours. The last hand made after dinner chocolate was just right to give me the full but not stuffed feeling.
It is not cheap, but the location and quality service certainly make it worth paying a little extra.
