Booked the hotel through Superbreak for 1 night on 25th April for myself, husband and 12 year old daughter. Got a good deal for room and breakfast. Room nice and clean but in need of refurbishment, unusual to find a separate toilet but rather inconvenient when the wash basin in main bathroom. Try and get a B & B deal as breakfast would have cost us £12.50 each otherwise. Evening meals also very expensive, average a 1 course could set you back £20, but the main shock was the bar prices £10.70 for a bottle of Magners and a small glass of wine! Luckily Hotel situated close enough to some nice restaurants but if on a budget Wetherspoons three mins. down road.

“Not bad and pretty reasonable”

Novotel York Centre

28 Apr 2008

Stayed here after posting on the forum. It was a very clean hotel with a great breakfast which we all loved. Our 2 children were in the room with us and when the sofa was pulled out space was quite tight. However, we got by in the day time with the sofa folded up. Staff were great - they helped us unfolf the bed and then they brought extra blankets to our room. As it was easter they also gave our kids chocolate eggs which they liked! The swimming pool was very murky as if it had a lot chemicals in it. Also people were being a bit too boisterous around it for me to feel comfortable. However, clean towels were supplied at the pool along with a couple of small changing rooms. York was easy walking distance. We ate at Toto's nearby one of the nights - a very lovely cute little Italian restaurant. It cost us about £160 for 2 nights B&B for a family of 4, including one weekend night and a bank holiday - pretty reasonable!

“So so”

Novotel York Centre

The Hotel is so so - really nice views from the river side; competent and helpful staff at the desk. Very close to the centre of York. Clearly some money has been spent on the public areas and new flat screen TVs in all rooms. However the decor in the bedroom was very basic and hadn't really been touched since the 1980s. The room felt cramped and smelt slightly musty. A lot of room was take up with a massive desk/storage unit that took up about a quarter of the room. The bathroom was also dated and needed re-tiling. Not so much Ikea - more MFI.

Like other visitors we avoided the restaurant for dinner - a good call because breakfast was very average.

There is a pool but it s small and heavily chlorinated. There is inadequate changing facilities, no shower and no toilets nearby - so problematic.

“Would certainly return”

Novotel York Centre

8 Apr 2008

Stayed there for one night only as that was all the time that we had available. Would certainly return if/when we revisit York.

We had a double room with an additional double fold-out bed for our son. Clean, comfortable room, as was the rest of the hotel, although a little 'IKEA' for some people's taste. We've stayed in other Novotels in the UK and Europe and they tend to be good.

Very quiet location and ideal for the centre of York. Loads of restaurants and pubs if you facny eating out. We didn't use the hotel restuarant as we were eating out in the evening and still too full the following morning to do justice to the (relatvely expensive) breakfast.

We booked over the internet and paid £70 for the night which is pretty good, although their 'rack rate' is a bit silly.

We were very quickly checked into the hotel by the reception staff at the desk. The room was light and airey and clean and all that would be expected of a budget hotel. The shower was my only critic as it was not a power one and slightly weak. The bed was comfortable and spare pillows available in the cupboard. There was also a double seater settee to sit on and watch television and a tea/coffee facility. Pay for view DVDs service which I used one evening whilst my partner went on a Ghost Tour Walk. We paid £69.00 for one night and £89.00 for the second night including a buffet breakfast which was ample, the usual English breakfast and plenty of pastries, cereal, and a toast machine. The location is about a 10 min walk from the city centre. We did not have an evening meal so cannot make any comments. A hint we found out about later is that this Novotel also has other superior rooms you can upgrade too, although for a two night stay the room we had in this hotel is great. It also has limited room service menu late in the evening if you happen to miss your tea.
