“Very disappointed.”

Booked Golden Fleece having cancelled my Travelodge reservation (safe choice) after I read some reviews. Was very excited to go to a haunted pub! Arrived and left our stuff behind the bar. Went back late afternoon to check in and had to wait a while as bar staff in short supply, and no one else available to give us room keys etc. Had Minster Suite with some views of the Minster and very slopey floors due to age of building. Very quaint. BUT, although the bed linen and towels had been changed, the rooms (bedroom & lounge, bathroom), had not been cleaned. Hairs everywhere, dust, crumbs, just dirty. I went down to bar to complain, again this took a while as only one person around. Was told they would be able to clean later when relief bar staff came. Noticed a few other things with bathroom. Waste basket not emptied, last occupant's soap still there (hairs & all), and decided not to stay at all. Got refund and left. The pub itself was nice, with a good range of beers / ales. We didn't stay to find out what they were like though. I was very disappointed. At almost £100 per night, this is not what I expect.

“Wonderful room, service variable”

Stayed at the Golden Fleece for my girlfriends birthday as she loves haunted hotels and the Golden Fleece is meant to be one of the most haunted in York, if not the UK (soon to appear on Most Haunted on Living TV.) Everything went smoothly when we arrived, beautiful room on the top floor, bar staff who guided us up were incredibly friendly and accommodating.

However the next morning was a different ball game entirely, the sign in the room said breakfast was served 8.30 - 9. So we trundled down for 9 and were greeted by an irate woman who said she had been waiting for us and that we were lucky to get breakfast. Which considering the room costs £100 and we were there on time seems rather unreasonable. The breakfast itself would rate as one of the worst that I have had in some time.

We then asked about leaving our car in their car park so that we could wander around York and were told that there were other guests arriving and we would have to move it. When asked where to park, we were told to follow the signs, which we did and had to pay £10 for all day parking.

For what it is, rooms above a pub, I felt the whole experience was over priced. My advice is that unless you really want to stay in a haunted pub there are plenty of better places to stay in York.

We have stayed (family with 2 teenage kids) at the Golden Fleece 4 times so far. We normally go off season (Dec. and Jan.) First off, WE LOVE YORK. The very first time we went to York (1998), we stayed at the Golden Fleece. It's a 3 story property with a pub downstairs. In evenings, the pub is usually full but not loud. It's usually pretty "smokey" (what do you expect of a pub) but it's not that bad and I'm not a smoker. It's on a busy street, across from Marks & Spencers, but the street noise has never kept me up. I used to enjoy staying up late and people watch out the window. The food has always been really good (be aware with breakfast though, remember, Black Pudding looks alot like sausage patties). The help has always been more than accomodating and friendly. Whenever we book a trip to York, we check on the Golden Fleece first. We had to stay at other great B&B's in York but there's nothing wrong with the Golden Fleece.

Unfortunately, we stayed two nights at the Golden Fleece a couple of years ago. The attendants didn't even know we were there. Maid service was non-existent until I complained. Breakfast wasn't served until later in the day, so we were ripped off for that since, as tourists, we didn't want to wait until almost 10 a.m. to eat!!! The only reason we stayed the additional night was because we would have been charged a cancellation fee (I kick myself about not just paying the fee and getting the heck out of there!). It is a rip-off and my advice is to go to the Moat Inn over a few blocks. The Golden Fleece is certainly located in the right section of York --- known as "The Shambles"!
