Looked good on the web site, good AA review. Fortunatley booked it via CentralR.com so got it cheaper.
We booked a "Superior room", hate to think what the others were like. The room had a massive damp patch in the corner, bed was clean, that was all, bathroom was ill fitting had to run round in the shower to get wet. The bathroom bin was not emptied nor the sink or toilet cleaned. The hotel looked like it was fitted out and run by Mr Bodge it. The carpet were really dirty.
Good thing - location

“Mouldy Hotel”

Gateway to York Hotel

18 Jun 2008

I stopped at this hotel for a weekend break. The room I was put into had mould growing out of the wall. It was so bad that fur was growing out. The receptionist moved us to another room which was ok but the interior was horrible. Orange bed covers and curtains no worse than a hostel. When I thought things could not get any worse I went to the mens toilets to see that a bin had been put under a leaking sink and that mushrooms from the damp were growing from the wall!!!

“Great Value for money”

Gateway to York Hotel

12 May 2008

We bought something from ebay and had to collect it. We live in Berkshire and the items were in York! So we decided to make a little break of it and stay overnight in a hotel and go sight seeing the next day. I booked a room on late rooms for £39 and was a bit worried as to what it would be like, as it was so cheap!
But my worries were soon forgotten when we arrived at the hotel. We arrived late in the evening, but the reception attendent still welcomed us with a friendly smile and gave us our key. We got to our room, simple and clean with a lovely view of the gardens behind the hotel, we even saw a bunny hpping around in the flower beds!
Breakfast was average, but served with a smile, and there was a good selection of cereals and juices.

Overall the stay was pleasurable and we couldnt have asked for more at £39 b&b!

“Cheap and Cheerful”

Gateway to York Hotel

24 Mar 2008

We were looking for something cheap and cheerful around York. This hotel was exactly what we were looking for. This is not the best hotel around but it is well worth the money. We were put into a superior room and it was very nicely decorated and we had lovely views of the gardens. The staff were friendly the young male receptionist was very helpful he seemed to be doing the reception, bar, and breakfast which he did very well. We had a few problems with fresh towels and missing cups but he was quick to sort this problem out. The night receptionist an older woman was ok but seemed a little slow on the bar. The waitresses were very friendly and the breakfast were great. We did not notice any dirty plates left on tables they were promptly picked up by the waitress and male receptionist working. We did manage to view a budget room and we were glad to get the superior. The budget rooms looked cheap with orange bed covers and white chairs. There were a few problems with light bulbs not working, towels left in the hall way, and the towels missing. Overall though a nice hotel just make sure you get a superior room!

    • Liked — The views from the room. Friendly staff.
    • Disliked — Towels in the hallway. Dark hallways and missing light bulbs.
