My colleagues and I stayed at Marmadukes for a conference a few weeks ago and thought it was an excellent choice of venue. It was really stylish and individual. The hotel’s location was handy for the city centre and there was a free shuttle service which collected any of us who came by train. The food was all outstanding too – we had a buffet, an evening meal and breakfast.

I’m planning to take my wife there for her birthday in May and tie it in with a trip to York Races which I think is quite easy to get to from the hotel.

Plus points for me:

Great breakfast delivered bang on time to my door
Fast broadband in my room
Comfortable bed
Fast, efficient check-in staff

On the downside:

Limited parking – some of the other delegates had to park in car parks in town.

“Good but not quite 4 star”

Marmadukes Hotel

30 Mar 2008

We have just returned from a three night stay at Marmadukes Hotel which overall was good but many details need to be addressed to warrant the very expensive price. Details such as the hotel assured us of a place for the car which was sometimes available sometimes not with a lot of switiching cars about by the staff. In the room little details were lacking like no paper handkies or flannels the chambermaid did as little as possible not even emptying glasses or cleaning cups from the day before, with the tea and coffee tray there were no biscuits, relaxation suite only has two gym machines to use so if there are more than two people you have problems. Generally we enjoyed it and the food was excellent in the restaurant. Just needs to address the above problems.

“Good for golf weekends”

Marmadukes Hotel

8 Mar 2008

The hotel has a great location and is a very nice building. It looks like some sort of Victorian mansion, but is not at all stuffy or old fashioned when you get inside and see how it has been done out. I recently stayed there for one of their golf weekends and thought it was pretty good value for money. Price included room, 3 course meal in the restaurant and full english breakfast in the morning also price of golf and transfer to and from the course. Found it served our purpose very well. The hotel is pretty handy for having a drink in the centre of York and is walking distance to the Minster and other sights. Have stayed in hotels of this grade all over the UK for golf and business I found Marmadukes to be up there with the best of them. Food exceptional too.

“Dreadful stay”

Marmadukes Hotel

9 Dec 2007
12/12 found this review helpful

I was nearly 7 months pregnant at the time of our stay and having read the previous review dated 5th December 2007 I felt compelled to post my views.
We booked this hotel as our last romantic break before the birth of our first baby.
I was horrified to find that the room we were given was in the attic with the walls sloping steeply at the side of the bed. The furniture in the room was cheap and had been treated with a dark wood stain to try to blend in with the antiques in the more expensive rooms.
I had great difficulty getting in and out of bed due to the proximity of the sloping walls and my advanced state of pregnancy and hardly slept a wink due to the noise of the bed when we turned over.
I cannot recall the exact amount we paid but it was over £100 per night. The rooms shown on the website bore no resemblance whatsoever to the attic room we stayed in and I would have preferred to stay in a Travelodge with a more basic and spacious room.
I have stayed in many luxury hotels and whilst I'm sure the more expensive rooms are very nice we were greatly disappointed with our attic room.
We stayed for two nights and left as early as we could on Sunday morning to return home.
I only wish that I'd complained to the staff in the hotel. The room we were given was not fit to be occupied by guests but should have been utilised as a laundry store!
