“Nice hotel, but room was a bit pokey for the money”

A colleague and I were recommended to stay at this hotel, when we had to visit York for work, and the price of a 'petite single' (they weren't joking!) was just under £70 prpn for bed and a light breakfast.
The hotel is about 10-15 minutes walk from the Minster and centre of York, but I would recommend a taxi ride from the station if you have big bags - although the traffic can be terrible!
Upon arrival at the hotel we had to pre-authorise credit cards for £100 for each room for the night (seems a bit excessive for me!), but the friendly receptionist then showed us around the main hotel area then took as to our rooms in the annexe. My room was on the 2nd floor and it is fair to say that I could only just get into the room with my small wheeled case! Having said that it was a reasonable sized single (wedged against the wall), with a plethora of cushions and even a teddy on it), a flat screen TV with satellite above it, tea/coffee facilities (with a very wide range of fruit teas, etc) and even a small packet of home-made fudge had been left for me!
The ensuite bathroom had a nice shower and had really beautiful toiletries provided (not sure why I got a bath bombe though, as there was no bath!).
We had a drink in the bar before heading out into York, and again the staff were friendly and professional, and the wine was decent quality.
In the morning there is a free light breakfast of tea/coffee, fruit juice, pastries/croissants and toast available (which we found to be more than adequate!). Cooked breakfasts can also be paid for, but I didn't see what items were available on there so cannot comment.
All in all I would be more than happy to stay at this hotel again, but I think that more than 1 night in the smaller rooms would probably be too much.

We were really loking forward to having a shrt break here and booked a Deluxe Double.
Check in was a bit of a mess to be honest. We were asked to supply our debit card as a guarantee, which we did.
We were shown to a room basically in the attic. Whilst it was clean and nicely decorated it was far too small to be classed as Deluxe. We asked if we could be changed to a more suitable room given the cost. We were told all other rooms were full. We thought about our situation and advised the receptionist that we would therefore be leaving---then surprise surprise a more suitable room was found! This was a much better room with good space and furniture, however the bathroom, whilst spacious had a broken blind at the window and pretty rough feeling towles.
We booked for dinner, as it was so highly recomended everywhere in the hotel. It was very nice , but not the fantastic experience we were offered. The cauliflower cheese was more like a very thin cauliflower soup!
Breakfast was good, but having to pay extra in addition to the room rate, really isn't on. I ordered the kedgeree which was far to over spiced with curry powder when it arrived, some 45mins after ordering!!
We checked out and payed our not insignificant bill with cash.
Then next morning at home we checked our bank statement via the internet and to out horror disvovered our debit card had been debited by £300. It took several e-mails and telephne calls to discuss this with someone and I was furious. I expressly requested that my account was credited that day with cash, not a card refund as this would have taken up tp 7 days with a weekend in the middle. This request was ignored and I received an answerphone message from th manager to say my card had been refunded. He also called at a time I had already said I would be out!! He left a curt message saying I could call him back directly if I needed to discuss anything further, but left no contact number!
I contacted the switchboard directly and requested that my cmplaint was taken to a higher level. Never once were any of my e0mails or calls returned. I did however over a week later receive a very badly typed and spelt letter of apology.
The product and service they advertise falls way below the mark in reality!
Beware, at these prices!!!!

My colleagues and I stayed at Marmadukes for a conference a few weeks ago and thought it was an excellent choice of venue. It was really stylish and individual. The hotel’s location was handy for the city centre and there was a free shuttle service which collected any of us who came by train. The food was all outstanding too – we had a buffet, an evening meal and breakfast.

I’m planning to take my wife there for her birthday in May and tie it in with a trip to York Races which I think is quite easy to get to from the hotel.

Plus points for me:

Great breakfast delivered bang on time to my door
Fast broadband in my room
Comfortable bed
Fast, efficient check-in staff

On the downside:

Limited parking – some of the other delegates had to park in car parks in town.

“Good but not quite 4 star”

Marmadukes Hotel

30 Mar 2008

We have just returned from a three night stay at Marmadukes Hotel which overall was good but many details need to be addressed to warrant the very expensive price. Details such as the hotel assured us of a place for the car which was sometimes available sometimes not with a lot of switiching cars about by the staff. In the room little details were lacking like no paper handkies or flannels the chambermaid did as little as possible not even emptying glasses or cleaning cups from the day before, with the tea and coffee tray there were no biscuits, relaxation suite only has two gym machines to use so if there are more than two people you have problems. Generally we enjoyed it and the food was excellent in the restaurant. Just needs to address the above problems.
