I always crosscheck the places I stay between this website and the reviews on LateRooms. This place has over 170 reviews and 93% of them would return, extordinary.
The hotel is modern and trendy and situated where it all happens. Ok you dont get the personal touch but hey, at £74 a night you can put up with the odd European receptionist.
Sift through the couple of bad reviews on here then check in and find out for yourself.

My self and my mother-in-law stayed here 27th june for 2 nights as a shopping trip was needed for our summer hols. We arrived at 1.30pm and checked into the room with no problems. We noticed that it had a single bed and a fold down double even though we had booked a twin. Our problems started that night. Every time I moved in the double bed it made a knocking noise rather loudly. The room had no air con so we had to have the window open, however a Wetherspoons is directly over the road and closed at 3.00am. The noise through the night was awful and by 5.00am I was ready to kill someone. We got up next morning and mentioned this to the staff. We had breakfast but I avoided the scrambled eggs as I didn't fancy eating someones hair. We came back later in the afternoon and the bed still had not been fixed but a fan had been put into the room. Anyway the next day after another night of little sleep we checked out and mentioned it to the member of staff at reception and I got a "Thanks for letting us know, maintainece will be in on Monday". The fact that this was Sunday was obviously beyond her. Anyway I think that you are better of in spending your money elsewhere as we will not be staying here again

I was in York for one night with my wife to celebrate my brother’s birthday. I chose this hotel due to location and I also liked the look of the traveller’s photos here on trip advisor. The price was £130.

First off no hotel parking was available, no biggy had to park in a pay and display council car park close by. Then the fun started, long wait at check in when I finally checked in I had a faulty key card, and then the replacement card was for the wrong room. This would have been o.k. But every trip to reception I had to take the stairs from the 4th floor as staff were hogging the lift to send things up and down.

The room was small, the bathroom has no bath and the shower was filthy. As we were going out on the night and it was pouring down I went to reception, as phone in room wasn’t working, to arrange a taxi for later on. Only one person was on reception, which is split into two as a bar. She was busy checking people in so I’d thought I’d ask the guy next to her who was basically doing nothing as he was manning the bar bit of the reception desk at 5.45pm. and no one in reception was drinking to my knowledge.

Big mistake, the bartender was fuming that I had insulted him by asking him to phone a taxi. As he must have been a similar age to me, 29, there was a physical tension and the fact there was a 3-foot wide desk between us was a good thing. I stood in line and asked the girl next to him, who claimed she could not get one. I don’t know but most hotels have good relationships with local taxi firm’s.

The stay ended with the breakfast buffet the next day, we went around 7:30, which was pretty empty on a Sunday morning. However we sat down and got tea delivered to the table and went to the hot plate were the food was. When we came back they had took our drinks away. No big deal maybe but as we moved about two meters in an empty place I’m sure staff seen us getting food. I honestly think that the bartender from the night before who finds it demeaning phoning taxi’s, but is now collecting dirty plates had a word with someone.

Sorry for an awful review but the staff was the worst I have ever come across. In particular one member who showed threatening behaviour for no reason.

Stopped in York on way home from a cruise and picked this hotel at random. What a find! Brilliant accomodation and friendly, efficient staff.
The hotel is situated inside the famous walls of Old Town York and is within walking distance of The Shambles, York Minster and all the historic sites.
It is very reasonably priced, spotlessly clean and although slightly minimalist in design is very well designed with modern furniture and fittings.
Highly recommend this to anyone who wants to sample typical Yorkshire friendliness.

“A real diamond in York”

To be honest, I did not expect much when my colleague booked me in at Hotel 53, but I was very pleasantly surprised.

The first thing that struck me as soon as I arrived was the pleasantness of the staff there, who were genuinely pleased to help me. (Unlike the robots who work at the Monk Bar/Hilton etc)

I was more than happy with the room size. I had only booked a single, but this must have been a double room at least because it was massive. The facilities were great. I had a shower and "Power Shower" does not do it justice, it nearly took my head off it was so intense.

On the evening, i dined in the restaurant, and can have no complaints about the food. There was a great selection, from hearty British fayre, to posh nosh.

Whilst having a stroll around beautiful York on the evening, I actually walked past the Park Inn, and felt immensley superior to be staying at the uniquely wonderful Hotel 53 - an absolute must if you are staying in York.
