I carefully read the only other review on Trip Advisor, and thought that I could read between the lines and see that it was worth a chance after all. The website has some rave reviews and it is featured in a guide book of special places to stay.
Sorry to say I was wrong. Based on the cost, of £85 per night for B&B (per room and therefore for both of us), I did expect something rather nice. The main inn was so lovely, it was so clean and polished!! However, the bedroom was very small and reminded me most of my in-laws guest room of 20 years ago! The bed was comfortable enough, but it did have that strange thing where there is a sheet and then a duvet. Also, if I'm really picky, the towels had had fabric conditioner used on them and were slimey-feeling.
Whilst the breakfasts were faultless, the one main meal we stopped for was over-priced and the vegetables done to death.

Although the surrounding country-side is spectacular, and the hotel grounds and garden stunning, both the room and the restaurant at the inn were a major disappointment. The room itself was raher generic and sterile, though the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom spacious and well-equipped.However, upon arrival we were told that because of a nasty gnat problem in the summer months, we were advised not to open any windows until after dark. Given that dark does not arrive until very late in late June, this was an inconvenience, one that the owners could fix with proper screens. Still, the small bar was lovely, and after drinks we were escorted into the dining room. The only lights in the room were exteremely bright--indeed, blinding--spots, and when we asked that the lights to be dimmed, we were told that there was no dimmer; so, we chose to eat in dull light, barely able to see our food. No matter--the food was truly dismal. My tomato soup was canned-like, and my husband's lamb (a specialty of Northumberland) was mushy--very overcooked meat served with a thick rosemary-infuseed gravy rather than au jus as it was advertised. My main course--a stilton, vegetable crumble tasted as if it came directly from Marks and Sparks! The meal was terribly over-priced for the quality of the ingredients and preparation. I must say, however, that the breakfast the following morning was superb--expertly cooked smoked haddock and poached eggs. In spite of its beautiful location, I cannot recommend The Pheasant Inn.
